Stay Ahead of the BYO Trend
Prepare for end users to bring their own everything A guide to acronyms in a BYO world Separate BYOE fact from fiction Case Study: A gradual transition to BYOE Capitalize on the benefits, and make a case for BYOE Stay Ahead of the BYO Trend Assess Your Current BYO State Set Forward-Looking BYOE Goals and Develop an Action Plan Implement Your Action Steps and Monitor Success

Resisting the BYO trend is no longer an option; end users are bringing their own everything, whether IT likes it or not “Mobile devices have permeated the work place. To ignore this fact and not put policies, procedures and tools in place to manage the environment and protect corporate/client data is negligent.” -- Rex, Professional Services, IT Manager 2014 3.3 devices 2020 6 devices Knowledge workers are predicted to be carrying 3.3 devices by 2014 and more than 6 devices in Expect that device fragmentation will continue, if not increase; IT needs to be prepared with a device-agnostic strategy. (Sources: Deloitte’s “Understanding the Bring-Your-Own-Device landscape” and Citrix’s “Best practices to make BYOD simple and secure.”) End users expect to be able to connect to corporate resources with their devices. Creating a self-provisioning onboarding process will save IT time and money. Prepare for futuristic devices. Form factors are constantly changing in the world of consumer technology. Be prepared for technology trends like wearables to start infiltrating your organization. It’s not just devices. Employees will also be connecting to corporate resources through personal apps, networks, clouds, and their digital identities.

Get ready for end users to bring their own everything
It’s not just about devices anymore. Users are bringing their own apps, network, and cloud. Devices started the BYO trend when users realized they preferred to use their personal devices (e.g. smartphones, tablets, laptops) to do work. IT departments have embraced this trend; with the proper processes and tools in place, IT can enable BYOD without users going around them. Applications tag along on personal devices, with users often defaulting to their own apps when corporate solutions fall short. Collaboration and storage apps such as Dropbox and Google Docs are common in BYOA. IT should investigate, and determine whether user needs are being met with the current corporate solutions. Networks connect devices and apps to each other, and to the cloud. Many believe that BYON (Bring Your Own Network) is a recent trend, but rogue access points and personal networks have been used by employees for years. Today, users most commonly connect using home Wi-Fi, cellular networks, or public Wi-Fi networks to access corporate resources. The personal cloud is quickly becoming the place where devices, apps, and networks meet. Users connect to their personal clouds in order to have immediate access whatever they need, from anywhere. Essentially, a user’s identity and personas live in the cloud. Consider how personal clouds coexist with enterprise clouds, and how users’ multiple personas can complement each other.

Separate BYOE fact from BYOE fiction
The BYO phenomenon has spawned a number of rumors; get your facts straight before you jump in head first. The BYO phenomenon means the death of the IT department FACT OK, perhaps not the death of the IT department, but the IT department as we know it. The BYO trend will eventually get IT out of the device and procurement business and have IT delivering services instead. BYO is less safe than corporately issued technology FICTION Security risks are primarily associated with human behavior; regardless of whether employees are using corporate technology or their own, they will likely engage in the same behavior. BYO can attract and retain talent FICTION Most IT leaders agree that mobile devices don’t attract employees, even in a BYOD environment. Those surveyed ranked benefits like improved productivity and lower help desk costs as more beneficial.* There is a secret formula to achieving success with BYO FICTION BYOE is not an all-or-nothing proposition, and solutions are unique to each organization, or even each department within an organization. IT needs to consider many factors to create a flexible solution. BYO has a lower TCO than corporately issued devices FACT BYO can save money, but only if done properly, and over a long time period. Organizations should aim to achieve cost savings, but reinvest those savings back into getting the most out of a BYOE plan. *Source: Info-Tech Research Group; N = 134

Focus your strategy on your end users; they are the ones driving BYOE
The BYO phenomenon is driven by users who have grown dissatisfied with traditional corporate technology solutions. In the early days of the BYO phenomenon, users were frustrated by having to carry second corporate devices that were less functional than their personal devices. It was often easier to use a personal device for work, with or without IT’s blessing. Remember: end users are not all created equal. There are many factors that will contribute to users’ attitude towards BYO; technology skills, role, salary, mobility, and work-life balance are just a few. Collect input from as many employees as possible in the planning stage of your BYO plan to ensure that the plan addresses most end user idiosyncrasies. Info-Tech Insight Users realized they preferred using their own app ecosystems to perform work tasks and connect to corporate resources. Personal cloud, storage, productivity and collaboration further pushed the personal into the corporate. Today, organizations need to embrace this BYOE trend; with the proper plan, policies, and technologies in place, IT can securely enable BYOE without having users going around them. Users will be more satisfied, and IT will have more visibility and control. “You can’t please everyone. One of the most important things to do is to manage exceptions well; if you don’t, you are doomed.” -- Sigrid, Procurement Officer, Professional Services

The company understands the main driver behind BYOE; the end users
Case study: a large financial services company is gradually developing a strategy to manage and capitalize on BYOE The company aims to control and manage a secure environment while still allowing end users the freedom to be productive with their own technologies. Organization: A large financial services company with a diverse set of end users. Sales reps operate semi-autonomously with the ability to create their own websites. Industry: Financial services Number of Seats: 20,000 Situation: The company is researching to develop a secure BYOE solution for end users while also reducing costs. Complication: IT is struggling to create a comprehensive BYOE program that satisfies the needs of each of their diverse end-user groups while maintaining control of their sensitive corporate data. The company understands the main driver behind BYOE; the end users “This driver is pretty consistent across the board – people want a device that they’re comfortable with that they can use for work and pleasure. […] From a recruiting perspective, employee engagement and employee satisfaction, we recognize that we have to do something that allows them that freedom.” -- Associate Manager, Client Technology Solutions
