1 GOAL FOR TODAY: Importance of Graphs.. How to make one.
Why do we need graphs?

2

3 Parts of a Graph Vocabulary: Independent variable:
Found on the X axis The variable that is being tested (ex. New drug, fertilizer) The “if” part of an “If-then” hypothesis Found on horizontal line Dependant variable: Found on the Y axis Variable that is measured at the end of an experiment, the results. The “then” part of an “If-then” hypothesis. Found on the vertical line In summary: "if x is given, then y occurs", where x represents the independent variables and y represents the dependent variables.

5 Graphs and Data Tables 1. Data tables are used to organize data which will be plotted in a graph. MOST OF THE TIME…. First column in the table is for the independent variable. Second column is another for the dependent variable. Each column should be titled, and include units of measurement. Data in the table must be arranged in ascending or descending order!!

6 Types of graphs: BAR GRAPH LINE GRAPH Bar, line, circle, pie
III. What type of graphs are these?: 1. ________________ 2._______________ BAR GRAPH LINE GRAPH

7 More Graphs….What types are they?
Pie Graph Histogram _______________________ ________________________

8 Creating a Line Graph: Step-by-Step
Creating a Line Graph: Step-by-Step **Fill in your paper with the RED writing TITLE the graph__________________ Touch downs scored by NY Giants Homeruns scored by Derek Jeter VARIABLES – identify them! What are they? Where do they go on the graph? Weight in KG – Y axes dependent variable Months (jan, feb.) – X axes-independent variable LABEL the axes ** Remember: Independent on X axes - horizontal line dependent on Y axes – vertical line. (DON’T FORGET THE UNITS!!) SCALE – Number the axes: What is the largest number you need? How many lines are available? Can you skip lines to spread the graph out?

9 5. PLOT the data points 6. CONNECT – draw a line between data points only!

10 PLOTTING A LINE GRAPH: In order to plot a line graph, you’ll need the materials listed below: Graph paper Ruler Pencil with an eraser (pens are NOT PERMITTED as mistakes are permanent!!

11 GUIDELINES: Always use graph paper, as it is accurate (do not use notebook paper) Draw all lines with a ruler. Do not start on the edge of the paper. Only use PENCIL as neatness always counts. Use a whole piece of graph paper to do a graph. MINI graphs are hard to read!
