Aftermath of the compromise
The south gained greatly by the strengthening of the fugitive slave law, the north gained a new free state, California. Texas lost territory but was compensated with 10 million dollars to pay for its debt. Slave trade was prohibited in Washington DC, but slavery was not. The compromise did not end all the political tensions between the free and slave states, being that slavery was still a major issue at hand, the compromise was limited in that it did not fully stop the tensions between the north and south, rather the compromise in a sense only postponed the civil war.

The act instituted the notion of “Popular Sovereignty” where people who live within a territory (state) can decide whether or not they want that state to have slavery. Dred Scott vs Sandford 1856-1857
This supreme court case was a major act being that the supreme court ruled that all people of african descent in the US were not considered a certified US citizen. This would mean that all african “americans” did not have any US rights to do anything, even if they were free or not. The supreme court also ruled that congress lacked power to successfully ban slavery in US territories. The significance of the court case caused blacks to be unable to be US citizens as well as sue federal courts, leaving them with no voice.
