1
Apple Reducing their Carbon Footprint
2
Apple Inc. Profile Apple created in 1977 manufactures and designs personal computers, digital music players, software, and mobile communication devices Headquartered in Cupertino, California Employees- 46,600 worldwide 233 stores in the U.S. and 84 international stores Started their environmental policy in 1990 and has strived to reduce their carbon footprint and make energy efficient products
3
Total Carbon Footprint
Apple’s carbon footprint is calculated using these five criteria: 1. Manufacturing- 45% 2. Transportation- 5% 3. Product Use- 46% 4. Recycling- 1% 5. Facilities- 3%
4
Lowering Carbon Footprint Through Manufacturing
Material Use- Apple manufactures their products to be lighter, smaller, and thinner thus using less materials Toxic Substance Removal- worked with manufacture partners to eliminate these from their products Responsible Manufacturing- making sure workers have a safe environment, are treated with respect and dignity and lastly have responsible manufacturing environments

Manufacturing
6
Transportation Employs a design team that creates packages that are small, light, and protective. Reduces material and waste Reduces emissions used in transportation of the product
7
Transportation- smaller packages use less resources
8
Product Use Majority of carbon emissions for Apple comes from product use Design their products to be as energy efficient as possible Designing both the hardware and operating system Apple is able to make sure they work together to reduce power.
9
Product Use Examples
10
Recycling Product recyclability- Apple designs products that have valuable material that are in demand by producers of other products making them easier to recycle Longer lasting products- Apple designs products that are built to last- their notebook battery life lasts up too five times of their competitor’s Responsible recycling- nothing ships to other countries to be recycled and all recyclers must comply with all health and safety laws.
11
Apple’s Current Recycling
12
Facilities Renewable Energy- Apple is using this in an number of their facilities and is installing state-of-the-art-digital controls to monitor usage Employee Commuter Programs- Apple has a number of public transportation programs for their employees depending on the community they work and live in
13
Emission Savings
14
Conclusion As you can see Apple is making an effort to reduce their carbon footprint. There are many benefits to this: 1. Environmental 2. Health 3. Saves money 4. Profit growth The reduction in the carbon footprint is a responsible operation guideline for Apple to go by and using this guideline while growing will minimize the impact on the environment
