Identifying Acids and Bases
Conceptual Chemistry A December 3, 2014 3rd Hour
2
Before we begin… Lab safety contracts
We will be doing our first lab tomorrow If the lab safety contract has not been signed, you cannot do the lab and you will receive a zero on it Schedule for the rest of the week QUIZ TOMORROW!
3
Daily Chemistry Question (DCQ)
You will receive a Daily Chemistry Question weekly handout. Please put your name on it – I will be collecting it after you are done and you will pick it up at the beginning of class the next day. At the end of the week, these will be collected and graded for accuracy.
4
Daily Chemistry Question
What are some examples of bases? List at least two. Draw at least two pictures of substances that are acids.
5
Video Please turn to page 8 in your note packet.
We will be watching the video Acids & Bases. You will need to take notes along with the video.
6
Acids and Acid Formulas
An acid donates hydrogen ions (H+). Properties of an acid: Sour Feels like water Reacts with metal Stings Electrolytes Turns litmus paper red You can recognize the formula of an acid because most acids start with H (hydrogen.)
7
Types of Acids Two types of acids:
Inorganic acids start with H, end in one other element from the right side of the periodic table, and do not have O’s in them. Examples include HCl, H2S, HF, HI, and H3P. Oxy-acids start with H and end with multiple O’s. Examples include HNO3, H2SO4, and H3PO4.
8
Bases A base accepts hydrogen ions (H+). Properties of a base:
Tastes bitter Feels slippery Does not react with metal Electrolytes Turns litmus paper blue You can recognize the formula of a base because most bases end in OH (hydroxide.) Examples include NaOH, Ca(OH)2, Mg(OH)2, Al(OH)3, and LiOH.
9
Indicators An indicator identifies acids and bases.
There are many different kinds of indicators. A few are discussed here.
10
Litmus Paper Quick and simple.
Tells whether a substance is an acid or a base. Does not tell strength. If litmus paper is blue, substance is a base. If litmus paper is red, substance is an acid. If blue stays blue and red stays red, substance is neutral.
11
Phenolphthalein Tells whether a substance is an acid or a base
Does not tell strength If solution is clear, substance is an acid or neutral If solution is pink or magenta, substance is a base
12
Other indicators Includes universal indicator and pH paper.
These have many colors compared on a color chart. Tells whether a substance is an acid or a base. Also identifies the strength of an acid or a base. Each color represents a different pH.
13
Indicator Flowers Demo
Please turn to page 10 in your note packet. Use colored pencils to shade in the correct color for each indicator at the given pH values. Use the chart above for what color to use. Once completed, we will do the demo!
