• Sugar refining - Tongaat-Hulett refinery in Tongaat and the export terminal at Durban harbour.
• Chemicals - Break-of-bulk industries produce paint, toiletries and pharmaceuticals from imported raw materials, eg. Unilever and AECI makes fertilizer and explosives.
