Listen carefully to the tampura. What is it doing? NB double-stopping on the sarangi Why does the texture sound fuller than it would if the sarangi part were played on a violin? When does the texture change, and how?

Which notes of the rag are most strongly emphasised in the opening? Are the notes you would expect? Sa and Pa are usually the most important notes in all rags BUT rags have two notes which receive emphasis to give the rag its character, vadi and samvadi. In this rag vadi is Dha (Ab) and samvadi is Re (Db)

What is the range of lines 19-20? Find a passage which emphasises Re more Lines 26-27, starting note. Highest note? Are there any passages which highlight other notes of the scale? Almost all phrases at the start of the tala begin with Ga

8 Melody 4 Find some very fast scales
These are called tans Find lines within the jhalla which start with material derived from the opening of line 19. How do these coincide with the tala?
