Nuclear Structure Research
Developments since July 2011 Consolidated grant awarded – 3 out of 4 experimental themes funded. Nuclear Theory award incorporated into the same grant (and a combined proposal expected in the future). No other STFC funding mechanism for nuclear research STFC-funded research themes (Core research of group) Level ordering and nuclear wavefunction via transfer reactions; nuclear wavefunctions for double beta-decay programme (SJF) Proton drip line physics (DMC) Ground state properties of radioisotopes via laser spectroscopy (JB, PC) EPSRC-funded (including applied nuclear physics) Fission fragment spectroscopy with STEFF spectrometer (AGS) Nuclear data measurements at nTOF (CERN) (JB)

Nuclear Structure Research
Developments since July 2011 Manchester hosted International Conference in 2011: Lord Ernest Rutherford – a Century of Discovery - Public lectures - Outreach activities - MOSI Exhibition Group now provides members for three International Programme Advisory Committees: - Argonne National Laboratory - Jyvaskyla Accelerator Laboratory (Chair) - CERN ISOLDE/neutron Time-of-Flight Committee SJF accepted invitation to STFC Science Board (from July 2012)

Nuclear Structure Research
Developments since July 2011 Core Research: Issues IoP Review: Health of Nuclear Physics (SJF on panel) – report not yet complete but likely that delivery of Y1 taught courses for the UK cohort of PhD nuclear physicists will be shared across the UK university groups. Group now has three Advanced Fellows – School needs to consider future staffing a the group as a whole. PPAN dissolved; new projects will be considered as part of programmatic review (“ISOL” SoI submitted with Manchester involvement)
5
Applied Nuclear Research
Looking for additional funding to make RF post sustainable from Sept 2012 – BNFL Endowment? Mini-IPS grant ended. Follow-on STFC IPS application (PI Dave Cullen) with Christie Hospital being considered at 17th July panel. AWE forming strategic partnership with UoM – possible involvement in nuclear security (analysis) work.

Nuclear education & training
Group delivers most of School’s course units in nuclear physics, nuclear labs, projects Group supporting delivery of MACE’s MEng in Mech. Eng. with Nucl. Eng. Deliver course unit for Southampton University (MSc in Sustainable Energy) NTEC delivery (NTEC Coordinating Centre, N03, N32, MSc projects) Nuclear Engineering Industrial Doctorate Centre (Director – JB) Since 2011: PG Cert in Nuclear Technology for national “Nucleargraduate” scheme CPD courses: Beginners and Advanced Geant4; MCNP for MSc, PhD and researchers, Answers Suite codes, FISPIN, two courses for EU Safeguards Inspectors Nuclear Summer School in Shandong, 2011 (Continuing discussions with UoM) Likely contribution to a University-wide MSc in Nuclear Technology
