1 WEEK 5: UNDERSTANDING SCALE
What is “SCALE” and how can it help you with your model?

2 What Is SCALE? The ratio of a distance on a map to the corresponding actual distance: the ratio of a linear dimension of a model to the same dimension of a full-scale original. This sounds complicated, but it won’t seem that way after we break it down. If you don’t understand it, you may turn into this guy: WATCH

3 SCALE FIGURE ACTIVITY Twist a pipe cleaner to resemble a human figure. (alternative: cutout a paper human-shaped silhouette) Measure yourself and these figures to understand scale For example: a 4’0” tall person at ¼”=1’0” would need a 1” tall figure Use this figure to determine sizing for your bridge, if you are creating a model

4 ADDITIONAL SCALE ACTIVITIES
Check out the SCALE in the handouts and complete the ‘Drawing to Scale’ handout Create an architect’s scale (details can be found in Resource Guide) Optional Video (Finding the scale of the Eiffel Tower) Find or estimate your client’s height(s) and draw them to scale. Smaller structures use less resources. Measure and evaluate a few spaces you use. How much space do you really need for these activities? Is the size of the space too big or too small?
