3 Implementing EPP at UCLA
Copy Paper – 30% PCW Recycled Content * UCLA environment – mandates are problematic * 25,000 faculty & staff * OfficeMax spend $9M FY08 * Pitched Product at Administrative Officer’s Meeting - Highlighted small (9%) premium over virgin stock - Polled for likelihood to take action * Article in Controller’s Newsletter * Article on Buying Portal * Worked with UCOP to equalize pricing for recycled * Results of somewhat passive campaign: +26% share

4 Implementing EPP at UCLA
Copy Paper – 30% PCW Recycled Content * Obtained data from supplier on individual purchases of virgin stock and 30% recycled * Identified Departments, Requestors, and their Chief Administrative Officers * Campaign to CAOs – Simple to Forward - Identify Requestors and SKUs purchased - Provide comparable desired SKUs - Request they direct staff to buy desired SKUs - Two series of s: about 150 total * Targeted Campaign Results – +83% share

5 Implementing EPP at UCLA
Copy Paper – 30% PCW Recycled Content * On-going activity: - Customers blame bad batches of paper on recycled aspect; - Older copy equipment experiencing more jamming - Mandate would have alienated these customers - Bring supplier’s paper expert to visit problem areas - Goal is to win over time and allow for some flexibility – 80/20, then 90/10, …

6 Implementing EPP at UCLA
Desktop / Laptop Computers * UCLA Environment – primary vendor is reseller, includes Dell, HP, Gateway, Lenovo, etc. - Dell and HP dominate market share - Long-standing computer commodity team standard configurations offer deeper discounts - 90% of purchases are standard configurations - Initial review of standard configurations showed - ENERGYSTAR© compliance and EPEAT™ Silver or Bronze, with one exception (we removed it)

7 Implementing EPP at UCLA
Desktop / Laptop Computers * Now 9 UC Dell standard configurations * ENERGYSTAR© 4.0 (removed one configuration) * EPEAT™ bronze (removed one configuration) * Standard configurations either EPEAT™ Gold or Silver

8 Implementing EPP at UCLA
Similarities and differences: * Choice – no hard mandate * Use of recycled paper and computer reseller strongly encouraged * Follow-up on “maverick spend” * Refer to President’s policy on Sustainability * Aim for 80%, then 90% utilization * Work behind the scenes with commodity team and standard configurations to present best values to campus

9 QUESTIONS? This concludes the American Institute of Architects Continuing Education Systems Program.
