What makes a polygon? Compare them and see!

Now it’s your turn! Decide which of the following shapes are polygons. If at any time you want to take another look at examples of shapes that are and are not polygons click on the question mark.
6
Find the polygon… Click on the polygon.
7
Sorry… Polygons are closed shapes. They cannot have breaks or openings.
8
Sorry… Polygons only have straight sides. They can’t have curves or be circles.
9
Congratulations! Polygons are closed shapes (no holes) with straight sides. All triangles are polygons.

Sorry… Polygons only have straight sides.

Excellent! Polygons sides meet at corners. All rectangles are polygons. Polygons do not have curves and are not circles.

Sorry… Polygons are closed figures. They do not have holes.
16
Sorry… Polygons’ sides meet at corners.
17
All right! Polygons do not have to be typical shapes (like squares or triangles).
18
Ready for a challenge? Find the polygon…
19
Sorry… The sides of polygons can’t cross. A polygon is one shape.
20
Sorry… A polygon is one shape. It can’t have other shapes inside of it.
21
Nice work! Polygons have straight sides that do not cross. A polygon is a single, 2-dimensional shape.
22
The Characteristics of Polygons
They only have straight sides. (No curves.) They have three or more sides. (You can’t make a closed shape out of two straight lines. Try!) Their sides meet at corners (vertices). (No intersections or crossing.) They are closed shapes. (No holes, breaks, or shapes within shapes.)
23
Congratulations! You have successfully completed this learning activity about the characteristics of polygons. Look around you…do you see any polygons? Good Bye! Go back to the beginning and play again?
