Stationary edges next to modulating fields appear to shift position. Click here to see interactive demonstrations. When the light and dark edges are on contiguous sides of the polygons, the polygons appear to shift up and down; when the light and dark edges are on opposite sides, the polygons appear to contort. The effect is similar to the “phenomenal phenomena” of Gregory & Heard (1983), who modulated the luminance of a surrounding field. A demonstration of their effect is shown in panel B.
