Roots of the Cold War A: During WWII the US & Soviet Union were allies fighting a common enemy but: 1 – political, social & economic systems were different 2 – each tried to expand its influence around the world 3 – never fought each other directly in open warfare A: Competing ideological systems: 1 – Western Democracies believed in freedom, rights & independence 2 – Eastern Communists believed in totalitarianism, censorship & a government run economy
