4 LOCATED IN SOUTHEAST EUROPE
Surrounded by water on three sides----Peninsula. ***MOUNTAINOUS (Covers 3/4th of the country with snowy peaks in winter)** Highest Mountain—Mount Olympus—Home of the gods.

5 GEOGRAPHY OF GREECE ISOLATED VALLEYS LIMITED FERTILE LAND,
Crops of grains, grapes, & olives Light & Simple diet FEW RIVERS (Can dry up in summer) MODERATE CLIMATE HOT ,DRY SUMMERS, WET WINTERS

6 Advantages/Disadvantages
Access to sea Trade opportunities transportation DISADVANTAGES: Not good for farming ***mountains separate the city-states…lack of unity** Not many resources.

7 The Sea Name the 3 seas that surround Greece. Aegean , Ionian, Black
Homer called the water around Greece, “the Watery Ways.”

8 Effects of the Geography
Could not feed a large population No more than 2 million people lived on ancient Greece Grow fruits and vegetables in a few spots. Meat was rare.

10 MINOAN CIVILIZATION Early civilization that grew on the Island of Crete Named after King Minos In early 2600 B. C. worked with gold and bronze and a system of writing. B.C. height of this civilization

11 MINOAN CIVILIZATION Sea-faring traders-honey, wine, olive oil
Traded with: Asia Minor, Egypt, Syria & Greece Capital city: Knossos Royal family lived in wealth with running water, sewers and rooms—bathrooms, bedrooms etc. Minoan decline began around 1450 B. C…… possibly due to earthquake or volcanic eruption.

15 MYCENAEAN CIVILIZATION
Moved to the Greek peninsula in 1900 B.C. Mixed their culture with local people Culture named after a palace at Mycenae, the richest most important city Borrowed many parts of Minoan culture Pottery, jewelry, decorations, writing style used by scribes from Crete and dominated Minoan sea trade

18 Decline Warfare was frequent between kingdoms causing the decline
Mycenaean civilization collapsed about 1100 B.C. After this...Greece slips into a “dark age” until about 800 B.C.
