4. When Spanish explorers reached the Americas, they told tales of gold, silver, and kingdoms wealthy beyond belief. Infer if you think this would draw more explorers to the America’s? Why or why not? (Turn and talk)

5. Spanish explorers in the Americas conquered people and searched for gold. Spain became richer, while many Native Americans suffered from harsh treatment at the hands of the Spaniards. What do you think the Spanish were expecting from this new world? Do you think they will find it, or were they disappointed? (Turn and talk)

6. Explorers from Spain were known as conquistadors
Explorers from Spain were known as conquistadors. Conquistadors were given the task from Spanish rulers to explore, and create settlements, as long as they gave Spain 1/5 of any treasure they found. If they failed to discover treasure, he would lose all his fortune. What is your opinion on the deal; was it fair to the Conquistadors; Should they have to give up the treasure they found? 7. Two wealthy empires, The Aztec in what is now Mexico and Central America and the Inca in South America, were among the richest prizes the conquistadors claimed. Hernan Cortes conquered the Aztec Empire in 1521 and gained access to huge amount of gold for himself and Spain. What might this result in? (Turn and talk)

Independently complete the reading “Why Spain Won” on page 43, and answer the following comprehension questions:
What did the Spanish have that Native Americans did not that led them to victory?
Describe why did so many Native Americans fell ill when the Spanish arrived?
What do people have now that helps them resist many diseases?  

10. Group Work
Each group will either be designated to be the Aztecs/Incas or the Conquistadors.
You will be asked to work as a group to write a journal entry from that specific point of view.
Each group member must contribute at least one sentence to the journal entry
