2 Did You Know The teen years are filled with pressures, challenges, and responsibilities that can seem overwhelming. It’s not surprising that such stressors can cause feelings of anxiety and even mild depression.

3 What Is Anxiety? Anxiety is a condition of feeling uneasy or worried about what may happen. It can have positive effects, such as motivating you to work harder. Other times it can have a negative effect. These are some of the symptoms of anxiety: 1. feelings of fear 2. perspiration, trembling, restlessness 3. rapid heart rate, lightheadedness, or shortness of breath D. Stress-management techniques can be used to reduce day-to-day anxiety

4 What is Depression? Everyone experiences sad moods. They can usually be managed by following these suggestions: 1. write about your feelings in a journal 2. engage in creative activity 3. talk about feeling to friends and family 4. Do something nice for someone else

5 What is Depression? B. Depression is a prolonged feeling of helplessness, hopelessness, and sadness. It is much stronger than a sad mood and more difficult to manage. C. There are two main types of depression 1. Reactive depression- response to an event 2. Major depression- a medical condition the requires treatment. It is more severe and lasts much longer than reactive depression.

6 What is Depression? D. Many teens who are suffering from depression don’t act sad. Symptoms of depression can include an irritable or restless mood, withdrawal from friends and activities; a change in appetite or weight; feelings of guilt or worthlessness, and a sense of helplessness.

7 Getting Help for Anxiety and Depression
Strategies for coping with mild forms of anxiety and depression include talking with supportive people, getting more physical activities, and volunteering. When anxiety or depression starts to interfere with daily life, it’s time to seek help from a counselor, school psychologist, or other health care professional. Both anxiety and depression are very treatable.
