As the majority of the German troops were sent to the western front to the offensive, the eastern front were not prepared to defend against the Russians The Germans supposed it would take 6 weeks for the Russians to mobilize However, the Russians were able to mobilize in 8 days and sent their first two armies (approximately 200,000 troops each army) into East Prussia Thus, the Gumbinnen Encounter took place and after a few days the Battle of Tannenberg commenced Why did the Battle of Tannenberg take place?

How did the Germans Emerge Victorious in the Battle of Tannenberg?
Firstly, the Russians lacked logistical support, due to their quick mobilization in 8 days Secondly, they lacked ammunition, which was crucial in overpowering and stopping the enemy Thirdly, most of all, the Russians lacked in reconnaissance forces which was a huge factor for their downfall As they relied on cavalry for reconnaissance, their communication skills were poor and messages were easily intercepted by the German Intelligence Lastly, the German Generals also used a plan to fight each army one by one and successfully ambushed the Second Russian Army How did the Germans Emerge Victorious in the Battle of Tannenberg?
