Don’t stare directly at the light. Beware-bulbs may get hot!
Investigation Shine a ray of light at a prism and move the prism until colours appear. What colours do you see? Are the colours always in the same order as you move the prism around? Draw a diagram to show what your observed. SAFETY: Don’t stare directly at the light. Beware-bulbs may get hot!

When white light is refracted through a prism the colours separate out because it moves slowly through the glass this is called dispersion

White light is made up of 7 colours
Light moves in waves The different colours move at different speeds - Red light has the longest wavelength - Violet has the shortest wavelength

Why do you see rainbows? Droplets of water in the air act like prisms and split the white light from the Sun into a spectrum of different colours.

You can make any colour by mixing three colours
