Exploring Data Patterns
Describe the pattern or relationship between variables Continue Pattern Relationship of Pattern
2
Patterns When looking at a set of data we look for patterns? What does this mean? Patterns could be numbers, letters or figures What is happening from one term to the next, increasing by 2,doubled, squared, every third letter Being able to describe a pattern and well ad write the next terms in the pattern. Describe mean use words.
3
Examples Describe pattern and write next 3 terms
4
Examples Describe the pattern and draw the next figure
5
Example Make a table start with month 0 being the first month
What is the pattern in your table, how do you know Use your table to answer the questions
6
Linear vs NonLinear How do we know if data we collect or have is linear, What do you look for? The pattern between terms (numbers) is the same, adding 2, multiple by 3, subtract 6 Proportionally Linear Graph starts at 0 The x coordinate over the y coordinate are proportional to all other ordered pairs, table almost sets this up All the ratios of x to y should simplify down to same value
7
Making Tables Always start at 0 for your table The 0 is the first term in the sequence, the y intercept where the line will start Find the pattern to complete the table Check to see if pattern makes sense Some Tables start at 1 make sure you know how to go forwards and backwards
8
Making a graph from table
What is represented on the x axis, what is represented on the y axis X should be the independent variable, this is the number that we can change, usually time or what figure we are using Y should be the dependent variable, this is the number that has the pattern associated with it Remember TAILS – what does this mean
9
TAILS Title – good description Axis – label them
Intervals on the axis – consistently spaced Label – check to make sure everything is labeled properly Scale – do the scales match the data and fit the graph
