1 Education for a Safer Future
Associate Professor Andrew Charleson, School of Architecture, Victoria University of Wellington. Indonesia – New Zealand Co-hosted Conference on Disaster Risk Management Jakarta, 5-6 August 2008

2 Imagine Courses have usually been conducted by a team of NZ and Indonesian experts. IEAA is the Indonesian Earthquake Engineering Association. The quarterly Earthquake Centre Newsletter which promotes good seismic design and construction practice is sent to IEEA which then notifies its members o Indonesia – New Zealand Co-hosted Conference on Disaster Risk Management Jakarta, 5-6 August 2008

3 Just Imagine Courses have usually been conducted by a team of NZ and Indonesian experts.

4 A moderate to large earthquake in Indonesia
No collapsed buildings Few collapsed houses Most damage repairable Few fatalities and injuries The examples are shown to indicate the potential for NZ to make further contributions to developing seismic design and construction skills. The software referred to is the preliminary seismic design program “RESIST” Indonesia – New Zealand Co-hosted Conference on Disaster Risk Management Jakarta, 5-6 August 2008

5 How to turn the dream into reality?

8 They need to be disseminated
Architects Civil/Structural engineers Local body engineers Contractors and builders The examples are shown to indicate the potential for NZ to make further contributions to developing seismic design and construction skills. 9 New Zealand has for over 25 years assisted Indonesians with this enormous task, and helped in other countries like India. The examples are shown to indicate the potential for NZ to make further contributions to developing seismic design and construction skills.
