5 Background Knowledge Australian author Markus Zusak was born in Sydney in He is the son of an Austrian father and German mother and he is the youngest of four children. At the age of 30, Zusak is considered as one of today's most innovative and poetic novelists. With the publication of The Book Thief, he is now being dubbed a 'literary phenomenon'  by Australian and U.S. critics. Zusak is the award-winning author of four previous books for young adults: The Underdog, Fighting Ruben Wolfe recipient of a 2006 Printz Honor for excellence in young adult literature, Getting the Girl, and I Am the Messenger. He lives in Sydney, with his wife and daughter.

How does Liesel’s brother’s death influence her? She gets nightmares that jerk her awake at night at the house of her foster parents.
