1 MAKING THE TRANSITION FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL LIBRARY TO THE ACADEMIC LIBRARY

1 librarian and 4 staff 25 databases Just over 35,000 volumes Don’t let the size of a library intimidate you. Most academic libraries have orientation workshops. Most of your courses will incorporate a library orientation into their program. It is important that you learn your way around your new library and library website. Get to know the librarian and friendly library staff at your new school.

5 Did you know? Subjects have been categorized into ten main classes.
Most high school libraries, and most public libraries use a classification system called The Dewey Decimal Classification System. It was named after the man who invented it: Melvil Dewey 000 – Computer science, information, and general works 100 – Philosophy and psychology 200 – Religion 300 – Social science 400 – Language 500 – Science 600 – Technology and applied science 700 – Arts and recreation 800 – Literature 900 – History and geography Subjects have been categorized into ten main classes. Each group is then subdivided into ten division and each division has ten sections.

7 Did you know? Most Academic Libraries don’t use the Dewey Decimal system. They use a classification system called : The Library of Congress Classification system (LCC) This system was developed in Washington, D. C. at the Library of Congress (go figure).

9 Did you know? Writing Centers Most Academic institutions have
A Writing Centre is a place where you can get help with: your writing. editing your work correction of spelling and grammar structuring your essay, checking your bibliography and your citations Unfortunately, they will not write your essay for you.

10 Time Management Skills
Did you know? Academic Librarians from Colleges and Universities in Ontario have indicated that the most important skills that you can bring with you to College or University are: Time Management Skills .

11 These things can help manage your time:
Use a planner to keep track of assigned readings and written assignments. Allow enough time to do adequate research. Make time to study and read your assigned readings. Don’t procrastinate.

12 Did you know? You will not be allowed to do research on the internet,
Google will not longer be your best friend. To do scholarly research you will be required to: use books journals databases periodicals conduct primary research

13 MOST OF YOUR RESEARCH WILL BE ON SCHOLARLY DATABASES
A Database is NOT the internet. A Database is a collection of reputable sources like scholarly journals, academic documents, periodicals, etc. Your academic institution has subscribed to these databases for your research. Find out which databases are geared towards your program and field of study.

14 Did you know? Using a variety of keyword searching techniques can help you find the exact information you are looking for in the on-line databases. It will help if you learn how to use BOOLEAN search techniques. Tutorial Google doesn’t require Boolean search techniques… but databases work best with this logic. Try this on our school databases.

15 Did You Know When you are connected on-line to the University Proxy on or off campus you can search their entire database collection at one time (instead of searching one database at a time) by connecting through Google Scholar. It will save you hours of searching.

16 Did you know? You will be required to know the difference between a
scholarly/academic source and a popular research source. Do you know the difference? primary and secondary research source.

17 It is very important that you evaluate
Did you know? It is very important that you evaluate your research sources: Detect the bias in your source. Find out if the author is reputable. Are they an expert? Make sure there is information for your bibliography. Record that information as you go along. Use a research log.

18 Did you know? It is imperative that you cite all your research sources
when you are writing a report, research paper or essay. You will be required to write a proper bibliography, formatted in the style requested by your professor or instructor. Do you know what the different styles are? You will be expected to know how to do this properly. The Citation Machine: can help you and so can The Writing Centre.

Most Post Secondary Institutions are trying to combat plagiarism by having students scan their work into programs like: before submitting work to the instructor or professor.
