What Simple Machines are
They are the most basic machines There are 6 types of simple machines All other machines are combinations of simple machines Simple machines give mechanical advantage
3
mechanical advantage Think: How the dolly & ramp makes moving boxes easier Tells how much a machine multiplies force or increases distance Mechanical advantage makes it easier to do things.
4
The Lever family All levers have a rigid arm that turns around a point called a fulcrum. There are 3 classes of levers 1st class – fulcrum is in the middle 2nd class – fulcrum is at one end & force is applied to the other end 3rd class – Fulcrum at one end & force applied to the middle of the arm.
5
Pulleys are modified levers
The point at the middle of the pulley is the fulcrum The rest of the pulley behaves like the arm of a lever Think: Why the wheel is the fulcrum.
6
Wheel and axle Wheels are also like levers
The axle of the wheel is the fulcrum The outer edge of the wheel is the arm
7
Incline Plane Family Incline planes multiply and redirect force
A wedge is a modified incline plane A screw is an incline plane rapped around a cylinder. Think: Why this road does not go straight up the hill.
8
Compound machines Is a machine made of more than one simple machine
Example: a pair of scissors has 2 levers and a wedge Think: Which simple machines are in a bicycle.
9
Summary Review How many simple machines are there?
What are the 2 parts of a lever? What family of simple machines is a wedge a part of? Write 4 sentences about how you use simple machines to make every day tasks easier.
