The properties of Matter
Chapter 1 The properties of Matter
2
What is matter?? What do you have in common with a toaster, a steaming bowl of soup or a neon sign? You are all made of matter Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space Matter must have a mass and a volume
3
Matter and mass Mass is the amount of matter in an object
What has more mass, you or an elephant? You have the same mass no matter where you are in the universe.
4
Weight Weight is the amount of gravitational force exerted on an object Weight partially depends on the mass, USUALLY the more mass an object has the more weight it has. Your weight does change when you leave Earth, for example you way less on the moon.
5
MASS AND WEIGHT ARE NOT THE SAME
Mass vs. weight MASS AND WEIGHT ARE NOT THE SAME Create a T-chart to compare the differences
6
Inertia Imagine kicking a soccer ball and bowling ball, which one would you rather kick? Why? Inertia is the tendency of an object to resist a change in motion. The bowling ball has more inertia Often times objects with more mass have more inertia Think about a grocery cart, would it be easier to pull a full cart or an empty cart?
