Three Main Parts of a Speech:
Introduction
Attention getter, link, thesis, preview statement
Body
Conclusion

5. The Introduction:
Attention getters.
Asking questions – Rhetorical Questions
Making References
Startling Statement
Giving a Quotation
Telling a Story

6. The Introduction:
The link (most often overlooked)
Comes between the attention getter and the thesis
Connects the attention getter to the focus of the speech
Helps the listener connect the two

7. The Introduction:
The Thesis Statement
Tells the audience exactly what you will be speaking about
Brief and to the point
Today I will inform you about…
My goal is to explain…
I believe each of you should…

8. The Introduction:
The Preview Statement
One sentence at the end of the introduction that gives the audience an overview of the major areas that will be discussed.
Today we will look at three Olympic success stories and focus on the physical and mental preparation of each athlete.

ACTIVITY:
In groups of three – write the introduction paragraph for the following speech.
“The positive role music can play in your life.”
Outline the introduction first. You must have all parts: attention getter, link, thesis, preview statement.

12. THE BODY:
Patterns for the body of the speech
Chronological – time sequence
Climactic – in order of importance
Spatial – based on space and proximity or geography
Cause & Effect – “Because of this, that happened.”
Problem & Solution – presents a problem or issue then discusses ways to solve

13. ACTIVITY:
Continue the speech you started about music.
Create a body outline that corresponds to the preview statement then choose an organizational strategy and write the body of your speech.

14. THE CONCLUSION:
Summary – usually the first part of the conclusion.
Reminds audience of the main parts of the speech – recalled from the preview statement
Final Impression – memorable final statement
Usually a call to action – agree with me in persuasion, activity in informative.
The “what could be”
Brings finality so that your audience knows you are finished
Final Sentence – are you finished?

Create a conclusion outline that corresponds to the preview statement then choose a final impression statement and compose the conclusion of your speech.
