2 Bobby had no where to go for safety.
What was our need Bobby Litambola (Royal Docks Community School Student) In November 2007, Seventeen year-old Bienda ('Bob') Litambola was assaulted and killed in Canning Town. Bobby had no where to go for safety.

3 What is CitySafe? CitySafe is a community-led campaign from Citizens UK to make our streets safer. The campaign is about young people building relationships with the police and local businesses to open CitySafe Havens. CitySafe Havens are places of safety for people in immediate danger or feeling threatened. Each CitySafe Haven displays a purple CitySafe logo in its window and works with the police to report 100% of crime . There are currently over 600 CitySafe Havens across London including City Hall. CitySafe works with thousands of young people and adults in schools, colleges, charities, churches, mosques, synagogues, and community groups, as part of the Citizens UK network. Through Community Organising, we bring together diverse groups to reweave the fabric of society.

4 The launch On Mon 10th Dec, 100 people gathered from PEACH (People’s Empowerment Alliance for Custom House), Shipman Youth Centre and Royal Docks Community School to hold a memorial for Bob Litambola (an ex Royal Docks student). Nine buildings have signed up to be CitySafe Havens so far in the Prince Regent Lane area, making it the first CitySafe Zone in Custom House: Garden Community Café, EastEnders’ Kebab, Prince Regent Newsagents, Prince Regent Hotel, Fish and Chips Shop, Custom House Library, Jay’s, Dara’s mini- mart and Shipman Youth Centre. Prince Regent Newsagents Fish and Chips Shop

7 It’s our area, our community and our responsibility….
Why do we want your support to develop the Safe Haven Zones across Newham. It’s our area, our community and our responsibility…. Means a better relationship with the police, Safer streets - better for business It means that local young people can work together with local businesses, the community and develop a citizenship campaign

8 This campaign ties in with the updated Jan PSHE Programme of study, Core Theme 1. Health and wellbeing. Pupils should have the opportunity to learn in: Key stage 3 - ways of recognising and reducing risk, minimising harm and strategies for getting help in emergency and risky situations (reference H20) Key stage 4 - about personal safety and protection, how to reduce risk and minimise harm in different settings (including social settings, the workplace, the street, on road and during travel) (reference H14) Key stage 5 - manage personal safety off-line, including when socialising (including meeting someone in person for the first time whom they met online, drink spiking, looking out for friends) and travelling (especially cycle safety, young driver safety, and passenger safety, including the risks of being a passenger with an intoxicated driver, and using only licenced taxis (reference H19)

9 What next We would like the council and local educational authority to signing up to become a CitySafe Haven and support the delivery of this dynamic citizenship campaign. We would like to include CitySafe Havens in the boroughs neighbourhood plans as this could improve community safety and cohesion If you would like more information please contact the Shipman CitySafe team on the following number or

Dear Lynne, The City Safe Project is a great community project that is being repeated in many parts of London creating safe areas and improving safety for youths and the community in general. I note you highlighted the Shipman Youth Centre and the Peoples Empowerment Alliance of Custom House. It is important to recognise each and every stakeholder involved in each of these City Safe Projects. In this particular case community groups working with yourself, and Newham Council, with the continued work and support of the dedicated local Neighbourhood Policing Teams in Newham as well as the businesses who have become involved in the scheme.  I wish you continued success in developing the scheme further and continued cooperation between all of the groups involved in implementing the City Safe Project. Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe Commissioner
