An extended comparison showing the similarities between two things.
Analogy An extended comparison showing the similarities between two dissimilar things. Example: comparing the heart to a pump.

Caesura A pause within a line of poetry that contributes to the rhythm of the line. Caesuras are indicated by the symbol //. Example: From the hag and hungry goblin || that into rags would rend ye, And the spirits that stand || by the naked man || in the Book of Moons, defend ye!

Image A word, phrase or figure of speech that addresses the senses, suggesting mental pictures of sights, sounds, smells, tastes, feelings, or actions. Example: He has a hyena's laugh. Her face is a garden. Her eyes were endless pools of beauty.

Inversion A reversal of the usual order or words to receive some sort of emphasis. Example: I Never Saw a Moor by Emily Dickinson I never saw a Moor – I never saw the Sea – Yet know I how the Heather looks And what a Billow be. I never spoke with God Nor visited in Heaven – Yet certain am I of the spot As if the Chart were given --

Pathos The feelings of pity, sympathy, or sorrow aroused by a literary work. Also known as emotional appeal. Example: “Forty thousand brothers could not with all their quantity of love make up my sum.” (Hamlet)

Sarcasm A strong form of verbal irony that is calculated to hurt someone through, for example, false praise. Example: “Deep would have been the blot upon his escutcheon if his chocolate had been ignobly waited on by only three men; he must have died of two.” (Tale of Two Cities)

Satire A genre or mode that ridicules human vice and folly in order to expose or correct it. Example: Jonathan Swift’s essay, A Modest Proposal: For Preventing the Children of Poor People in Ireland from Being a Burden to Their Parents or Country, and for Making Them Beneficial to the Public. “I have been assured by a very knowing American of my acquaintance in London, that a young healthy child well nursed is at a year old a most delicious, nourishing, and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled ...”
