3. Our Expectations
The main aim of Year 6 is to prepare the children for high school, closely followed by SATs.
To ensure they leave Morley Victoria with a well rounded approach to their high school life.
Extremely high expectations of behaviour.
Set an example to the rest of the school.
To be highly organised at ALL times.
To have FUN in their last year at Morley Victoria.
We intend to work hard and play hard!

8. SATs English and Maths. SATs week is the week beginning 14TH May 2018

9. SATs
The children will be very familiar with how they will be assessed before May.
SATs results and teacher assessments are passed up to high schools along with a report about their behaviour and attitude to learning.
The papers are marked externally and results are usually back in school by mid July.
Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar test.
Arithmetic test.

10. Groups
The children have been split into groups for Maths and reading comprehension.
All of the children are working on the same objectives but at different paces.
There may be movement within the groups and we also may change how we group the children. With the right attitude they will be successful in whatever group they are in.

11. Homework Is crucial! Maths and English homework.
Each subject should take approximately 20 minutes when set.
The children will become more independent as they progress through Year 6.
We value your support with ensuring that your child’s planner is signed weekly.
Maths homework is daily, SPaG once a week, reading comprehension once a week and whole school challenges.

12. How can I help my child?
Ensure your child attends regularly and arrives at school at 8.40am.
Name PE kit and uniform – it really helps!
Check homework before and after it is done.
Sign your child’s planner at the end of the week, ready for Wednesday morning.
Set clear and agreed times and places to do homework.
Encourage your child to take every opportunity available in his/her last year.
Read together as often as possible and make a note of it in their reading record.

13. English
It is an expectation children still read at least three times a week at home.
Question your child about what he/she is reading, e.g. What do you think will happen next? Who is your favourite character and why? Read together as often as possible.
Reading paper.
Help them to learn their spellings. The year 5/6 spelling list is in your child’s planner.
Handwriting and spelling will have a strong focus this year. Encourage them to join up at all times.

14. Maths Please help them to learn their tables.
Talk through problems but don’t do it for them!
Encourage the use of mathematical skills in everyday life, e.g. telling the time, using money, weighing objects.
Check that your child has highlighted key words and shown their working out.
Have they used the methods we have taught them effectively?

17. High School
It is important to visit all the high schools in your local area.
Thursday 28th September – Bruntcliffe Academy
Thursday 5th October – Woodkirk Academy (morning/ evening)
Thursday 21st September – Morley Academy
Please explore other schools in the area.
Preference forms need to be completed online by
October 31st. Our school cannot check these.
You can choose up to five different schools.
You will probably be allocated the high school which is closest to you.
The children will take part in a transition programme in the summer term.
