3 New student orientation
Make sure you have completed the new student orientation. It is a short, 4 minute video which will explain the basics of what you need to know to get started and to be successful in your course. (link provided in welcome )

4 About your instructor, Ms. Burkett
I am from Nebraska. I have a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry Education from the University of South Florida. I have two masters degrees; one in Educational Leadership and another in curriculum and instruction. I am currently working on a doctorate. GO INDIANS!!! I am AP certified in Environmental Science. I currently teach at Venice High School (VHS). I am the science department chair. I have two cats and enjoy working out.

6 expecatations To maintain learning momentum, you’ll be required to complete 5% of the course on a weekly basis. Students should complete modules in order without skipping around. Schedule and complete each Discussion Based Assessment (DBA) before taking the module exam. Assignments can be submitted up to 3 times. Exams can only be submitted once Students are required to maintain weekly contact with Ms. Burkett. It’s a requirement that students and their parent/guardian communicate with Ms. Burkett at least once per month. This can be accomplished via , text or phone call. Students can expect to spend between 5-7 hours per week for each course in order to be successful.

7 Discussion Based Assessment (DBA)
Go to Course Home Page – Book DBA sva-burkett.youcanbook.me YOU may choose to complete the DBA via phone call or text. YOU make the call or text at the designated time. Either answer 3-5 short-response questions or tell me about what you learned. Review material before you call After the call, write a summary in the “Student Comments” section of the DBA assignment Call will last approximately 5 minutes This is a graded assignment

8 Progress updates Detailed progress reports will be ed to both you and a parent/guardian every week-to-10 days. You don’t have to do anything with your update, but please remind your parent/guardian to reply back to me. Just ask them to type the word “Received” on the return . The progress update is simply a snapshot of your grade, assignments completed/assignments owed, and # of weeks ahead of pace/number of weeks behind the pace.

9 Grace period Students have access to the course 24/7 from any location that has internet access. Students must complete 20% of the course by day 28. A percent completion bar is available for students to track their progress. Students must show consistent progress. Students may drop the course within the first 28 days without penalty. If a student decide to drop after the first 28 days, or are dropped by the teacher for not completing the required assignments, it will be reported on your school transcript as a failing grade.

10 Technology You are responsible for your own computer, software, and internet service provider when taking SVA/FLVS courses off campus. If a course is taken on campus, communication hardware, software, and some technical assistance may be provided by the school depending on its availability. You can also get technology assistance through our website at flvs.net or by calling (800) option 2.

11 Academic integrity You are not permitted to turn in work that is not your own and you should not share your work with others. SVA reserves the right to require students to take a face-to-face proctored exam if necessary. SVA teachers use Turnitin.com to assess student work.

13 Welcome call Now that you have viewed this presentation, it is time for you to schedule a Welcome Call. Schedule an appointment using: sva- burkett.youcanbook.me. This will bring you to my scheduling calendar. Choose a time and fill in all required fields. YOU are responsible for calling me at the agreed upon time.
