Introduction Hydraulic motors provides continuous rotation and develop torque. Hydraulic motors takes oil at high pressure and converts the fluid energy into mechanical energy at the motor shaft. Hydraulic motors are widely used as hydrostatic transmissions, conveyer belt systems, air craft steering and control system, anti aircraft gun/missile subsystems etc.

Types of Hydraulic motors
Vane motors Gear motors Spur gear motor Helical gear motor Screw motor Piston motors Axial piston motors Radial piston motors

Vane motors Vane motors works on the principle opposite to that of vane pump. It consist of a cylinder rotor with radial slots. Vanes are inserted into these slots. The vanes can slide freely inside the slots. This rotor is mounted inside a cylindrical casing but eccentric with the casing as shown in figure.

Gear motors Gear motors are based on the principle opposite to that of gear pumps. It consist of two spur gears connected with their axes parallel to each other. Oil at high pressure is supplied at inlet. The high pressure oil expands and produces rotational motion of the gear and produces the torque at the outer shaft.

Hydraulic and Pneumatic Systems
Axial piston motors It consist of number of cylinders arranged around the periphery of a cylinder block. High pressure oil enters from one side into each set of a cylinders. This oil expands causing the plunges to reciprocate. The reciprocating motion is converted into rotational motion of the motor shaft by the swash plate. 2005/2006 I. Hydraulic and Pneumatic Systems

Radial piston motors In a radial piston motor pistons are arranged radially around the periphery of a cylinder block. The reciprocation of the cylinder is converted into rotational motion of the cylinder block which develops the required torque on the shaft.
