1 Coordinating Drawings & Specifications
ACT 380

2 Objective Recognize the unique roles that the drawings and the specifications play in a construction project

3 Drawings Show Size Form Quantity
Relationship of materials to each other Generic Type Graphic Representation of Construction Materials Schedules of : structural elements, equipment, and finishes

4 Specifications Define
Qualitative Requirements for: Products Materials Workmanship Define methods of installation Administrative procedures that relate to both drawings & specifications

5 Considerations for Drawings
Materials may appear many times throughout the drawings, but are specified ONLY once Use ONLY generic notes to identify --- not describe – the materials or components—If UDS is used – typically reference the specification See pgs and in PRM

6 Examples for Drawing Info
If on drawings you included “concrete pavers” and a change required “brick pavers” be used, you would have to locate all the drawings referencing the “concrete pavers” and change them If drawings used “unit pavers” ONLY the specifications would need to be changed

7 Drawing Symbols Symbols should be standard and refer to a generic class of material (concrete or wood) and not specific like walnut or oak Material systems should use generic references –e.g., use “roof membrane” on drawings –could end up 4-ply BUR with gravel surfacing or a loose laid ballasted EPDM If multiple systems are used, one could label as Type A, B, C…

8 Specifications Set Requirements for:
Physical qualities Chemical constituents Performance requirements Standards of workmanship Provide very detailed information related to the items listed above

9 Spec Example Drawings merely list “vapor retarder” while the specs define: Minimum perm rating Physical properties Required installation methods

10 Responsibility for Coordination of Drawings and Specifications
Should be handled by ONE person (they will still coordinate content with many others involved in the project) Often a checklist system is used to ensure: Necessary items are included in the specifications Specified items are consistent with the drawings Drawings do not duplicate the specifications
