6 The other side of Burr/Hamilton…
In 1804, a duel occurs between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton. It occurred because Burr accused Hamilton of insulting him during the governor race in 1804, and demanded an apology. Hamilton refused to apologize, and a duel was arranged to settle the “affair of honor” Burr was vice-president at the time of the duel, and this ended his political career, and killed Alexander Hamilton.

7 Simplifying the Presidency
Wanted to balance Federalist and Democratic-Republican ideals. Walked to his inauguration instead of riding in a carriage Attempted to shrink the government. Reduced navy/army Lowered influence of the Bank of the United States. Removed internal taxes, believed in a free market.

8 John Marshall and the Supreme Court
Marshall was a Federalist, and believed in a strong judiciary branch. Judiciary Act of 1801 increased federal judges by 16, and they were appointed by Adams as he left the Presidency Jefferson felt some were invalid, and this led to a conflict with the courts. Marbury v. Madison (1803) It would affirm the idea of Judicial Review- Supreme Court can declare an act unconstitutional.

9 Louisiana Purchase Over ten years, population increases in Ohio from 45, ,000. This shows a need for more land. Napoleon Bonaparte had gotten the Louisiana Territory back from France in 1800, and we were still worried about French control of the Continent. After France abandons a North American empire, they wanted to focus on Europe, Monroe and Livingston ended up purchasing the land for $15 million. Jefferson was worried about constitutionality, but the Senate ratified it. Doubled the area of the United States

The trip took 2.5 years, and mapped out the Western Territory to aid in expansion.
