2 Ephesians 1:3-7 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love 5 He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace…

3 Ephesians 1:3-6 I. The blessings of salvation from the Father:
Divine Election (1:3-4) Divine Predestination (1:5) Divine Grace (1:6) II. The blessings of salvation from the Son: Divine Redemption (1:7) …that process by which God, in Christ, redeems His people from their slavery to sin.

4 Redemption a releasing effected by payment of ransom;
deliverance procured by the payment of a ransom” Redemption presupposes a serious situation; a bondage, captivity, and/or slavery.

5 Ephesians 2:1-3 1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. 3 Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.

6 Psalm 58:3 “The wicked are estranged from the womb; these who speak lies go astray from birth.”

7 Redemption …the full deliverance of chosen sinners from the bondage, power and penalty of sin into the glorious freedom that comes from being made a child of God, all of which is purchased by the blood of Christ and motivated by the power of God’s grace.

8 There Is A Fountain Filled With Blood
“E’er since by faith I saw the stream Thy flowing wounds supply, Redeeming love has been my theme And shall be till I die!” ~William Cowper

9 Redemption The Procurer of Redemption – The Possessors of redemption –
“In Him” The Possessors of redemption – “we have redemption” The Price of redemption – “through His blood” The Purpose of redemption – “the forgiveness of our trespasses” The Principle of redemption – “according to the riches of His grace”

10 Redemption The Procurer of Redemption – “In Him”
Christ is the originator, the author, the source of redemption for sinners Christ is the accomplisher of redemption “4 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, 5 so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.” Galatians 4:4-5

11 Redemption The Procurer of Redemption – “In Him”
Christ is the originator, the author, the source of redemption for sinners Christ is the accomplisher of redemption Christ is qualified to be the Redeemer

12 Hebrews 2:9-10; 14-15 9 But we do see Him who was made for a little while lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone. 10 For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to perfect the author of their salvation through sufferings… 14 Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives.

13 Hebrews 9:12 “through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.”

14 1 Corinthians 1:30-31 30 But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, 31 so that, just as it is written, "LET HIM WHO BOASTS, BOAST IN THE LORD." The greatness of our redemption from sin will never be fully appreciated until we come to see the greatness of our Redeemer!

15 Redemption The Possessors of Redemption – “we have”
Redemption is particular “4 Surely our griefs He Himself bore, And our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed.” Isaiah 53:4-5

16 Redemption The Possessors of Redemption – “we have”
Redemption is particular “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us — for it is written, "CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO HANGS ON A TREE"…” Galatians 3:13

17 Redemption The Possessors of Redemption – “we have”
Redemption is particular “Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation.” Revelation 5:9

18 Who are the “We” - redeemed?
Those who are blessed of God (1:3) Those who are the chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world (1:4) Those who are the predestined unto adoption as sons (1:5) Those who are the accepted in Christ the Beloved, having freely received God’s grace (1:6) Those who are forgiven their trespasses (1:7) Those who possess the inheritance of salvation in Christ (1:11) Those who express faith in Christ (1:13) Those who are sealed in this grace of salvation by the Spirit of God (1:14)

19 Redemption The Possessors of Redemption – “we have”
Redemption is a possession 17 But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, 18 and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness (Romans 6:17-18) “Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 8:1)

20 Redemption The Price of Redemption –
In Him we have redemption through His blood…  “through His blood” is a kind of short-hand that speaks of the culmination of the sufferings and accomplishments of Jesus for our salvation. By the shed blood of Christ we are reconciled (made at peace) with God. Colossians 1: For it was the Father's good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, 20 and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross;

21 Redemption The Price of Redemption –
In Him we have redemption through His blood…  By the shed blood of Christ we are cleansed of our sins (kept in good moral standing before God and one another). In 1 John 1:7 we learn, 7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.

22 Redemption The Price of Redemption –
In Him we have redemption through His blood…  By the shed blood of Christ we are sanctified (made more and more like Christ). In Hebrews 13:12 we read, “Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people through His own blood, suffered outside the gate.”

23 1 Peter 1:18-19 “18 knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, 19 but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.”

24 Redemption The Purpose of Redemption the forgiveness of our trespasses
Redemption in Christ is equated with forgiveness, pardon, and release from the burden and due penalty of trespasses and sins. Hebrews 9:22 - And according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

25 Matthew 27:27-28 27 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; 28 for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.

26 1 John 3:4-10 4 Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness. 5 You know that He appeared in order to take away sins; and in Him there is no sin. 6 No one who abides in Him sins; no one who sins has seen Him or knows Him. 7 Little children, make sure no one deceives you; the one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous; 8 the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil. 9 No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 10 By this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother.

27 Psalm 103:12 As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.

28 Redemption The Principle of Redemption
In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace The guiding force, the very cause of our redemption, this deliverance from the penalty and power of sin so that we might live for God is simply the grace of God.

30 1 Corinthians 6:20 For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.

31 Redemption's blessings…
You have a great promise – You are a child of God, an heir of God, and a joint-heir with Jesus Christ (see Romans 8:17). You have a great provider – Just as it is a father’s responsibility to provide for his children our heavenly Father provides for His own (Matthew 6:31-34). And in Christ, we have the provision of the great Shepherd to guide those of us who are His sheep (see Psalm 23:1-6; 37: 23-24; John 10:11).

32 Redemption's blessings…
You have a great protector - Just as it is a king’s responsibility to protect his people, and a husband’s responsibility to protect his wife; Christ, who is our Husband and King, protects His own with sovereign power (see Ephesians 5:22-32; Revelation 19:6-7; 16).

33 Let the redeemed… Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom He has redeemed from the hand of the adversary (Psalm 107:2). Why? In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace… (Ephesians 1:7).
