1
Starter questions Name this molecule: Draw these molecules:
3-ethyloctane 1,4-dibromohexane 2,3,4-trimethylheptane 3,4-diethyl-3,4,5-trimethyldecane
2
Naming compounds with functional groups
L.O.: Understand and use the IUPAC rules of nomenclature for naming compounds with functional groups.
3
Prep work: read pages Specially pay attention to: How to calculate empirical and molecular formulae Difference between molecular and displayed formula.
4
IUPAC International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry.
5
Pentan-3-ol
6
Adding oxygen 1: Alcohols
The OH group is called an alcohol We either add a “–ol” to the end or an “hydroxy-” to the beginning for the name Draw these alcohols Methan-1-ol Butan-2,3-diol 3-ethyl-2-methylheptan-1,2,3,4,5-pentol
7
Adding suffixes starting with a vowel
We drop the ‘e’ after the alkane, so the alcohol of propane becomes propan-1-ol
8
Butanal
9
Adding oxygen 2: Aldehydes
Most famous is formaldehyde, CH2O, used to preserve dead tissue All have a doubly bonded oxygen, the “=O”, group at the end of the alkyl chain End with the suffix “-al” E.g. Propanal 1,1-dibromobutan-4-al 3-ethylpentan-1-al
10
Adding oxygen 3: Ketones
Most famous is acetone, C3H6O used in nail varnish remover The “=O” group is added to a carbon within the chain, not at the end as in aldehydes Simply add a “-one” suffix to the name e.g. Propan-2-one 3-bromo-2-methylheptan-4-one 2,3-diiodo-2-methylhexan-4,5-dione
11
Halogenoalkenes -F, -Cl, -Br, -I Prefix: Fluoro- Chloro- Bromo- Iodo- Example: 1-chloropropane
12
1- Chloropropane
13
2-Bromo-1-chlorobutane
14
1,1,2,2-Tetrachloroethane
18
ACIDS
19
More than one functional group or side chain
2-bromo-1-iodobutane 2-bromo-1-iodopo
