Let’s Warm Up Challenge: Build a model of a new building and present a performance to sell your design Time: You will have 10 minutes to build a model of a new building and prepare a presentation to a city council. The Scene: You have been asked to build a new building for your city. You will use the materials provided to build your building, and then tell your city council, what type of building you built, and why it is important to the city.
2
Debrief Discussion: How did your team divide to get all the work done?
Did you think of different locations for your city? Outer space, underwater, on a dandelion? Did you change the materials to make them more effective? How did your team work change when you had a performance element? How does practicing performances help you in school or your job?

What Drives Destination Imagination
The DI Philosophy Teaching 21st Century Skills. DI is student generated DI is student driven DI is student presented Geared toward finding students’ talents and strengths. No adult interference.
5
No adult interference Team Managers Can: Team Managers Can Not: Guide
Mentor Teach Plan Team Managers Can Not: Create Make Interpret
6
DI Process The colors depict who leads the process in each stage:
Green – the TM is in charge and takes the lead. Blue – the students lead and are in charge of performance and progress. It is important to note that the development of the students’ learning and understanding actually occurs during these repetitions. The development is reflected in a higher level of relevant knowledge and better use of skills: creative and critical thinking; project management; and teamwork. Spiral is a repeating process of trail and error…the learning takes place in the spiral, and as students improve in this process, the cycle gets smaller as students get faster.
7
DI Process DI program is made up of 2 components: Team Challenge:
Select one of 7 Challenges Emphasizes talents and skills of the whole team and each individual Sustained development and teamwork over time Instant Challenge: New at every tournament Practice Instant Challenges every meeting Emphasizes quick thinking and teamwork
8
Working With Students Establish norms for behavior. It’s THEIR team.
Talk to everyone about interference. Be prepared for set backs and re-starts. THIS IS NORMAL. Teach them time management. Have a plan, have more planned than you think you will use, be prepared that less will get done than you think. Be prepared to work with students with various learning styles, personalities and social skills. Help team to set goals.

Child Safety Background Check Teacher’s License
Check with your district Verified Volunteers Working with children Have two adults and at least two children at all meetings. When driving, always have at least two kids with you (no texting, phone calls). Have homeowners or renters insurance and automobile insurance. Get permission slips signed by parents for transportation and tools use. Ensuring safety is not interference; if the activity is not safe you can stop it. Students will need to find a safe way to complete the task.
12
Scheduling Team meetings should fit the needs of the team manager and the goals set by the team. Team meetings can be after school, in the evenings or on weekends. On average teams meet for 16 weeks, for an average of 2 hours a week. You may need to increase practice time as tournament gets closer depending on your solution.
13
Time Management Use Tools in the Roadmap to help guide your Team’s planning process. Set hard deadlines. Help students understand time constraints.
14
Team Conflict Team Conflict is natural and necessary.
Leads to more creative solutions. Manage the Team Conflict to be constructive not destructive. DI meetings are for DI, not external conflict.
