2 Introduction of The University of Tokyo
Established 1877 Type Public (National) Academic staff 2,429 full-time 175 part-time Admin. staff 5,779 Students 28,697 Undergraduates 14,274 Postgraduates 13,732 Doctoral students 6,022 Takeshi Fujiwara

3 Two Nuclear Departments in Univ. of Tokyo
The University of Tokyo Graduate School of Engineering Department of Nuclear Engineering and Management (located in Tokyo) Nuclear Professional School (located in Tokai-mura) Nuclear Engineering Research Laboratory(NERL) Reactor Control Division LINAC Control Division HIT Control Division The University of Tokyo started two nuclear departments as the 20th and 21st departments of the graduate school of Engineering in April of 2005 for meeting the needs of highly educated human resources. One is Department of Nuclear Engineering and Management; the other is Nuclear Professional School. Both are operated and managed together. Some professors of Quantum Engineering and Systems Science Department also studies nuclear engineering.

4 Japanese National Licenses & Nuclear Professional School
The graduates of the Nuclear Professional School, who are qualified with good achievements, are exempted to take the national examination of the licenses by MEXT and METI except the examination of nuclear law. No research, 1 year master course National Licenses Passed people Rage by UT The 48th Chief licensed reactor engineer 15 33.3% The 49th Chief licensed reactor engineer 11 22.2% The 50th Chief licensed reactor engineer 17 53.1% The 48 Chief licensed nuclear fuel technician 13 32.5% The 49 Chief licensed 12 44.4% The 50 Chief licensed 14 48.2% Chief licensed reactor engineer for the operation and management of nuclear power plants Chief licensed nuclear fuel technician Chief licensed reactor engineer is the national license that is required for the operation and management of nuclear power plants in Japan. Chief licensed nuclear fuel technician is also the national license for the operation of nuclear fuel and fuel cycle facilities. The graduates of the Professional Nuclear School who are qualified with good achievements are exempted to take the national examination of the licenses by MEXT and METI except the examination of nuclear law. for the operation of nuclear fuel and fuel cycle facilities Cover all the field to be a chief of a NPP

5 Nuclear Engineering Education at UT
Nuclear Engineering Basic Knowledge Nuclear Plant Engineering Nuclear Safety Radiation Safety Maintenance Engineering Nuclei and radiation measurement Waste management engineering Additional subject Nuclear law Human factor Nuclear physics Risks and communication Nuclear thermal hydrodynamics Organization Management Nuclear Structure Engineering Advanced Nuclear Reactor Fuel and Material Reactor designing Radiation shielding Nuclear Cycle Engineering Radiation application Nuclear hazard management Nuclear Basics

6 Publication of Textbooks (16 volumes) including fundamental/applied/societal subjects preparing to publish English version from Springer Examples of social aspects of Nuclear Technology: Nuclear policy, International security, International project, Nuclear management, Risk recognition and communication, Human management, Nuclear risk management, and Nuclear law/legislation

8 Now 1st edition is available!

9 Translated all lecture slides into English
Nuclear Engineering Basic Knowledge Nuclear Plant Engineering Nuclear Safety Radiation Safety Maintenance Engineering Nuclei and radiation measurement Waste management engineering Additional subject Nuclear law Human factor Nuclear physics Risks and communication Nuclear thermal hydrodynamics Organization Management Nuclear Structure Engineering Advanced Nuclear Reactor Fuel and Material Reactor designing Radiation shielding Nuclear Cycle Engineering Radiation application Nuclear hazard management Nuclear Basics MORE THAN 3000 slides

10 However… Great lecture material developed and modified during past 10 years (by professors at UT and many collaborations). However, these slides are only the lecture slides. The issue is that these notes are designed to be used with lecturers. Additional description will be required.

11 What is E-Learning? PPT files PDF files E-Learning Material

12 To learn something Textbook E-Learning Lecture Exercise Limited
At the school Anytime Anywhere Anytime Anywhere Limited At the school Attractive Active Interactive Not attractive Difficult Passive Attractive Interactive Attractive Explanation Adaptable Passive (Sometimes interactive)

13 The University of Tokyo’s policy
Our target is graduate student (Nuclear Engineering) Educate to be a chief of a reactor (NPP) Provide textbook Provide E-Learning material Provide PPT for lectures (will be available from UT moodle) Under IAEA MOU, license will be distributed IAEA Memorandum of Understanding University A The University of Tokyo University B License by UT University C

14 Matching the content to the educational target
Thousands of E-Learning contents are being developed Can’t be useful for all (Various needs and background) Kids Graduate students Government Company employee Citizen College students

15 E-learning material development at UT
Started developing from May 2013 under IAEA’s support 4 subjects will be published until 2015 Nuclear Structure Engineering (2013) Nuclear Plant Engineering Waste Management Engineering Maintenance Engineering Other 9 subjects until 2017

22 New approach DEMO with iPad 1. Interactive contents using tablet PCs.
Contents preparation for iPads and Android Tablets 2. Lecture video (DVDs) 1 contents are being developed at UT DEMO with iPad Moodle is a strong tool for managing students. However, contents should be interactive. It should be fun to learn! Rapid Development Rapid distribution Low cost Takeshi Fujiwara

23 Summary We focus on educating nuclear expert (will be chief of NPP)
Managed with Moodle Lecture material (Japanese) Lecture material (English) E-Learning Material We focus on educating nuclear expert (will be chief of NPP) We have developed nuclear educating materials (Japanese lecture program, text book, and English text book) However, considering to apply them for e-learning, we should work on truly useful e- learning material (development and distribution quickness is important.) Still needs a great effort to develop those materials In first edition, voices and additional animation will be recorded to the lecture slides. It will be great if ANENT members contribute on expanding and modifying the e- learning material to other targets!
