5 MUNICIPAL LAGOON AMMONIA REMOVAL
Problem: In the late 90’s, the U.S.E.P.A. began requiring small town wastewater operators to remove ammonia from their city lagoons prior to discharge to receiving streams. Solution: RIMCON designed, constructed, and successfully operated a small 50 ton clinoptilolite zeolite-based treatment system to remove ammonia to discharge standards. The system operated at 50 gallons per minute flow through and consisted of a primary treatment cell and a secondary treatment cell.

6 CONFINEMENT SWINE FACILITY AMMONIA REMOVAL AND RECOVERY
Problem: A Wyoming-based swine production facility had significant ammonia loading and odor issues within their site manure effluent storage lagoons. Solution: RIMCON designed a 2-cell zeolite-based treatment system to adsorb ammonia from the swine lagoons. The ammonia loaded zeolite was then stripped and the ammonia recovered as liquid ammonium-sulfate fertilizer to apply through center-pivot irrigation. Note that this process is also effective at dairy operations along with composting technologies.

8 COAL-BED METHANE DEVEOLPED WATER SODIUM ADSORPTION RATIO AND SALT LOAD REDUCTION AND REMOVAL
Problem: Water produced from development of Coal-Bed Methane wells in the Wyoming Powder River area is brackish and has very high sodium concentrations and salt concentrations that exceed river discharge limits. The water required treatment prior to discharge. While numerous methodologies were utilized to try to treat the water, costs were prohibitive and treatment was inefficient.

9 CBM Solution: RIMCON bench tested and field tested a zeolite based 3 cell treatment system to lower the water SAR and Salt contents. Following successful testing of the process, RIMCON designed, constructed, and operated 8 full zeolite-based treatment systems in the Powder River Basin with treatment rates varying from 400 gpm to 800 gpm. Process: The patented process consisted of 2 zeolite cells to adsorb and exchange sodium from the CBM water. A third cell then allowed the carbonate based salts to precipitate out of the water prior to discharge.

15 ZEOLITE-BASED URANIUM ADSORPTION PROCESS AND THEORY
Issue: A legacy uranium mill site in New Mexico had contaminated groundwater beneath the site. The site was using Reverse Osmosis to treat some of the site water but needed another cost effective method to treat low-level uranium contamination. Solution: RIMCON spent 5 years developing a new zeolite-based uranium adsorption system to treat site groundwater. The proprietary process removes uranium concentrations averaging 3.5 mg/L to the site discharge standard of 0.03 mg/L at an average operating cost of less than $2.00 per 1000 gallons.

16 Uranium Adsorption Theory
Cation preferential affinity depends on the size of the cation, molecular strength of cation and concentration of competing cations Clinoptilolite natural exchange complex contains potassium (valence +1) and calcium (valence +2) Oxycation of Uranium has an oxidation state of +6 in the uranyl ion form (UO2)2+ Uranium in the groundwater at the site is tied up with bicarbonate minerals and behaves as an anion The uranyl ion is freed in the process through pH adjustment RIMCON, LLC
