4 The rational expression of religious faith
Let’s Define Terms THEOLOGY Theology is any conversation about the divine Being DOCTRINE - what the whole Bible teaches us today about some particular topic + = The rational expression of religious faith Theo = God Logos = Rational Expression Fall Doctrine

5 Revelation – How Does God Reveal Himself?
General Revelation God is revealed through His creation to everyone Psalm 19:1-6 1 The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky proclaims the work of His hands. 2 Day after day they pour out speech; night after night they communicate knowledge. 3 There is no speech; there are no words; their voice is not heard. 4 Their message has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens He has pitched a tent for the sun. 5 It is like a groom coming from the bridal chamber; it rejoices like an athlete running a course. 6 It rises from one end of the heavens and circles to their other end; nothing is hidden from its heat. Romans 1:19-20 19 since what can be known about God is evident among them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, being understood through what He has made. As a result, people are without excuse. Fall Doctrine

6 Revelation – How Does God Reveal Himself?

9 Canon Canon - From a Semitic word meaning reed, which yielded the figurative sense of a measuring rod or ruler It refers to those writings, because of their divine and prophetic origins, that are esteemed as the rule or standard for the Christian faith God Created the Canon of Scripture Man Recognized It Not the Other Way Around Fall Doctrine

10 Canon - OT God, Himself, started the canon with the first writing
Moses added writings Joshua added writings Other prophets added writings Exodus 31:18 When He had finished speaking with him upon Mount Sinai, He gave Moses the two tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone, written by the finger of God. Exodus 34:27 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.” Joshua 24:26 And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God; and he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of the Lord. Amos 3:7 Surely the Lord God does nothing Unless He reveals His secret counsel To His servants the prophets.. Fall Doctrine

11 Canon – “Intermission”
The book of Malachi completes the OT around 435 BC The “Silence of the Heavens” No more prophets 1 Maccabees 9:27 (~160 BC) It was a time of great trouble for Israel, worse than anything that had happened to them since the time prophets ceased to appear among them. Fall Doctrine

12 Canon – NT John the Baptist – the first prophet in over 4 centuries. Points to… JESUS OT writers – “…thus says the Lord” Jesus – “I say unto you…” Apostles claimed the same authority at OT Prophets 2 Peter 3:1-2 1 This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you in which I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, 2 that you should remember the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your apostles. 2 Peter 3:15-16 15 and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you, 16 as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction. 1 Timothy 5:17-18 17 The elders who rule well are to be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching. 18 For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle the ox while he is threshing,” and “The laborer is worthy of his wages.” Fall Doctrine

13 Bible Characteristics - Authority
All the Words in Scripture are God’s Words “Thus says the Lord…” occurs over 100 times God spoke through the prophets All Scripture is “God-Breathed” The Holy Spirit convinces us To obey scripture is to obey God 2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,. 1 Corinthians 2:14 But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. 2 Peter 3:2 that you should remember the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your apostles. Fall Doctrine

14 Bible Characteristics - Clarity
Does not mean there are no difficult passages (Peter on Paul) Reading and understanding were expected Moral and Spiritual qualities needed Hermeneutics – The study of correct methods of interpretation Deuteronomy 6:6-7 6 These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. 1 Corinthians 2:14 But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. Fall Doctrine

15 Bible Characteristics - Necessity
The Bible is Necessary for… Knowing the Gospel Maintaining spiritual life Knowing God’s will Romans 10:13-17 13 for “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14 How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? 15 How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news of good things!” 16 However, they did not all heed the good news; for Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?” 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. Fall Doctrine

16 Bible Characteristics - Sufficiency
The Bible contains all we need for… Salvation Trusting God Perfectly Obeying God Perfectly No additions necessary 2 Timothy 3:15 and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. Psalm 119:1 How blessed are those whose way is blameless, Who walk in the law of the Lord. Deuteronomy 4:2 You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you. Deuteronomy 12:32 “Whatever I command you, you shall be careful to do; you shall not add to nor take away from it. Fall Doctrine

17 Biblical Inerrancy The inerrancy of Scripture means that Scripture in the original manuscripts does not affirm anything that is contrary to fact. The Bible can be inerrant and still: Speak in the ordinary language of everyday speech Include loose or free quotations Contain unusual or uncommon grammatical constructions Fall Doctrine
