We have two suffixes –s and –es, which mean “more than one”. It can be hard to remember all the letters and letter combinations use suffix –es. Actually, it is very simple. If you hear (iz) at the end of a base word meaning more than one, it is spelled –es. When suffix –s is used, you will only hear (s) or (z).

 Suffix –ed means “happened in the past. This suffix has three distinct sounds: (id), (d), and (t). In a base word ending with a “t” or a “d”, suffix –ed sounds like (id).

 After an unvoiced sound other than “t”, suffix –ed makes the sound (t).

After a voiced sound other than “d”, suffix –ed makes the sound (d).
