Chemistry I Objectives Unit 2 Chapter 4
What are atoms? State the four postulates of Dalton’s Atomic Theory. Summarize the discovery of atomic structure (Who found what, and how?). Discuss radioactivity and the nuclear atom. Identify the fundamental particles of atomic structure and describe them in terms of mass, charge, and location.

VI. Distinguish between atomic number (Z#) and mass number (A#) and know what they mean. VII. Compare and contrast neutral atoms, ions, and isotopes. Be able to write their complete chemical symbols. VIII. Define Atomic Mass Unit (amu) and explain why the masses in the periodic table are relative. Be able to calculate average atomic mass for an element given the masses and relative abundance of isotopes. X. Know the particles of radioactive decay and be able to write and balance radioactive decay equations.

I. Describe a wave in terms of its frequency, wavelength, speed and amplitude. II. Relate frequency and wavelength to wave velocity and use the equation c=f III. Identify the major regions of the electromagnetic spectrum in terms of wavelength and frequency. Explain what is meant by a quantum of energy. IV. Use Plank’s constant ( x J·s) to calculate the energy of a photon of light. E = hf V. State the main idea in Bohr’s model of the atom and distinguish between continuous and line spectra.

VI. Describe atomic orbitals in terms of their shape size and energy. VII. Be able to write electron configurations for elements in the s, p, and d blocks of the periodic table. Be able to use orbital notation to show electron configuration. VIII. Use the Aufbau Principle, Hund’s Rule, Pauli’s Exclusion Principle, orbital capacity, and electron spin to identify primary energy levels, sublevels, orbitals, and number of electrons for elements in the s, p, and d blocks of the periodic table.

Know the contributions of Dobereiner (triads), Newlands (octave), Mendeleev (table based on mass and properties), Mosely (table based on atomic #) III. Explain why elements within a group have similar properties and how those properties change as you move down a group. IV. Compare and contrast metals, nonmetals, and semimetals, and know their locations in the periodic table.
