Today in Room 326/311… ADMIT SLIP: Why do we believe science?
Date: 2/2/16 Topic: Inquiry & Claims Page # ___ Today in Room 326/311… ADMIT SLIP: Why do we believe science? HW: Claim-Evidence-Reasoning practice CONTENT OBJ: SW develop a hypothesis and find three pieces of evidence to support that hypothesis LANG. OBJ: SW explain their reasoning through speaking and writing ANNOUNCEMENTS: Journal for tomorrow!!! AGENDA: Admit Slip (10 min) AS Share-out (5 min) Inquiry Box Activity (20 min) CER notes (15 min) Murder Mystery practice (20 min) Exit Ticket (10 min)
3
Admit Slip Share Out Why do we believe science? What is a theory?
Why do we believe some theories more than others?
4
Inquiry Box Activity Get into lab groups (3-4 students each)
Do NOT touch the box What do you think is on the bottom? WHY??? (You need THREE pieces of evidence)
5
Making Connections How does the amount of evidence that supports a theory relate to the credibility of that theory? Is “common sense” a piece of evidence?? How does this idea of evidence relate to arguments in everyday conversation?
7
What’s a “claim?” A concluding statement that answers a question*
Usually one sentence in length Accurate and specific Example: Question: Who is the greatest person ever? Claim: Ms. Gately Is the greatest person ever.
8
What did you claim? What are some follow-up questions to any claim?
Why do you think that? How do you know? What is your evidence?
9
Other claims? EVIDENCE! Global warming Energy drinks Bottled water
Diets Axe body spray Airborne Organic food Vaccinations “2012” Sketchers “shape-ups” Vitamins Car insurance Balance bracelets Weight loss meds How can we VALIDATE a claim? EVIDENCE!
10
What is “evidence” ?? Evidence is all the data that supports your claim* Evidence must be sufficient (enough) and relevant to your claim Not all data is evidence! (Example?) Data must be from a reliable source Important to have MORE THAN ONE piece of evidence! (Why?) Makes your argument stronger!
11
What comes after evidence?
Make a claim, provide a fact (evidence)… that’s it? REASONING* Explanation that connects your claim to the evidence Shows that you have an understanding of the relationship between the evidence and your claim
12
CER = Claim-Evidence-Reasoning
Formula for advancing an argument! (Flowchart may help…)
15
Claim: “My Dad is an Alien”
k Let’s fill out a chart together…
17
Now, let’s put your CER skills to the test
For this class, you are private detectives, asked to solve a murder mystery case. You must make a claim (Answer: How did he die?), find evidence to support your claim, and provide reasoning to link the evidence/claim Example: Claim = He was stabbed by ___________. Evidence = Blood on knife was same as Mr. Xavier’s. Reasoning = During stabbing, blood would end up on knife.
18
Read Together… The Case of Mr. Xavier
19
Your Own Scenario Fill out the chart in your journal for your given scenario. Be prepared to share.
20
Groups provide their CER for their assigned scenario
Let’s hear ‘em! Groups provide their CER for their assigned scenario
22
Exit Ticket: Relevance?
1) Why is CER important for making an argument? 2) How can it be used in science? 3) How could it be used in other facets (parts) of life? Answer these questions in your journal, using examples.
23
Homework Choose one of the sentence starters below and make a claim… The best movie is ______________________. The greatest musical artist (solo or group) is ________________. The greatest (choose one) football/hockey/baseball/basketball player is _______________. For homework, write a paragraph using CER that supports your claim. Use stats/information from the internet as evidence, and make sure you justify that evidence with reasoning!
