1 Homonyms, Homographs, and Homophones
What’s the difference? What are some examples of each?

2 Homonyms: Words that have the same spelling and same pronunciation, but different meanings.

3 Lying: The books were lying on the table.
Lying caused Pinocchio's nose to grow.

4 Watch: I like to watch TV. Please set your watch for the correct time.

5 Page: Please open your book to page 15.
The nurse went to page the doctor.

6 Pen: The papers were corrected with a red pen.
The pig was in the pen eating grass.

7 Play: The dog likes to play with his ball.
He was the star of the school play.

8 Homographs: Words that have the same spelling, but different pronunciations and meanings.

9 Bow: The dog has a red bow around its neck.
He took a bow after his performance.

10 Scale: It is very difficult to scale a mountain.
The scale will tell us how much you weigh.

11 Tear: A single tear ran down my cheek.
Do not tear pages out of the book.

12 Row: Row the boat to shore. The chairs were lined up in a row.

13 Sink: Wash your hands in the sink. Please help me before I sink.

14 Homophones: Words that have the same pronunciation but different spelling and different meanings.

15 See & Sea: When you look through a telescope you can see stars.
The sea tortoise lives in the ocean.

16 Meet & Meat: It was a pleasure to meet you.
I love eating meat for dinner.

17 Blue & Blew: The little bow loved the blue balloon.
Allison blew bubbles for her little brother.

18 Pair & Pear: In order to play the game, you must roll the pair of dice. I would like a fresh pear for breakfast.

19 Ate & Eight: She ate the last strawberry. My favorite number is eight.
