Homonyms, Homographs, and Homophones
What’s the difference? What are some examples of each?

Homonyms: Words that have the same spelling and same pronunciation, but different meanings.

Lying: The books were lying on the table.
Lying caused Pinocchio's nose to grow.

Watch: I like to watch TV. Please set your watch for the correct time.

Page: Please open your book to page 15.
The nurse went to page the doctor.

Pen: The papers were corrected with a red pen.
The pig was in the pen eating grass.

Play: The dog likes to play with his ball.
He was the star of the school play.

Homographs: Words that have the same spelling, but different pronunciations and meanings.

Bow: The dog has a red bow around its neck.
He took a bow after his performance.

Scale: It is very difficult to scale a mountain.
The scale will tell us how much you weigh.

Tear: A single tear ran down my cheek.
Do not tear pages out of the book.
