Presentation on theme: "STARTER: Look at the food labels on your desk"— Presentation transcript:

1 STARTER: Look at the food labels on your desk
In your book answer the following questions: 1. What type of energy is stored in food? 2.Which type of food has the most energy? 3. What are the units of energy?

2 Learning Objectives ALL: Identify how much energy is in different types of food (Level 4) MOST: Compare energy required to function per day for people with different jobs (Level 5) SOME: Conclude how the experiment can be used to measure energy in food (Level 6)

3 But different people need different amounts of energy
We all need energy.... But different people need different amounts of energy

4 Who do you think needs more energy per day?
Elderly have lower energy requirements as not growing, loss of muscle tissue and decrease in body’s active cells. Young people need more energy for growth- new cells and muscles

5 Who do you think needs more energy per day?
9700 kJ 11700 kJ Boys have more muscles than girls and muscle cells need more energy

6 Who do you think needs more energy per day?

7 Who do you think needs more energy per day?
9700 kJ 10,000 kJ

8 Answer the following questions in your book (5 mins)
Who needs more energy, men or a women? Why? Who will need more energy, Mr Gibson (P.E teacher) or Miss Middleton (science teacher)? Why? 3) A male tennis player needs 16,700 kJ of energy per day and a male office worker needs 11,000 kJ per day. Explain why the tennis player needs more energy.

9 MOST: Compare energy required to function per day for people with different jobs (Level 5)

10 Finding energy in food When food burns, it releases chemical energy
If the food is burned under a test tube containing water, chemical energy in the water is transferred to heat energy and the water heats up The hotter the water gets, the more energy there is in the food

11 Which food contains the most energy practical
Wear safety goggles Work in pairs Record your results in the table in your book

12 Answer the questions on the worksheet
SOME: Evaluate the experiment on finding out how much energy is in different foods (Level 6)
