12 Matthew 9:9 As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.

13 Session 6 – What I Want to Want Considering Judas Iscariot
The Recap Session 1 – A Call to Follow – Join and Change Session 2 – What it looks like to follow Jesus - Faith Session 3 – Fearless – Overwhelming faith allows love Session 4 – Follow Wear – Clothe yourself… Session 5 – Fine Print Following Christ will eventually cost you something Session 6 – What I Want to Want Considering Judas Iscariot

14 While Jesus was in Bethany, in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table. When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. “Why this waste?” they asked. “This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor.” Aware of this, Jesus said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me. When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial. Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.” Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot—went to the chief priests and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?” So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver. From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over. Matthew 26: 6-16

15 Session 6 – What I Want to Want
Talk about something you really wanted in life, whether during adulthood or when you were a child. What did you do to try to get it? Did you succeed?

Play Video

17 Table Talk – Session 1 Have you ever seen someone put aside his or her wants in order to follow God’s will? How did that person’s actions influence your own faith? Talk about a time when you felt a tension between God’s will and your own. What did you do? In the video, Andy said, “God’s hand can’t be forced. His will can’t be thwarted. That god doesn’t exist.” How does that statement challenge the way you think about God? What comfort do you find in it?

18 Table Talk – Session 2 In what ways do you find yourself treating God like a “hip-pocket God”? Have you ever had to give something up – a dream, an ambition, money, career advancement – in order to follow Jesus? Explain. What is one area of your life in which you need to say no to yourself and follow Jesus? What can this group do to support you?

19 Session 6 – What I Want to Want
Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot—went to the chief priests and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?” So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver. From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over. Matthew 26: 14-16 God’s hand can’t be forced. His will can’t be thwarted.

20 I want to want what You want more than what I want.
Moving Forward We all begin our relationship with Jesus like Judas. We have a plan and we want God to act on ‘our’ agenda. As we follow Jesus he helps loosen our grip on our agenda. Surrendering our agenda is a defining moment. When we decide to follow Jesus, we discover who we really are Heavenly Father, I want to want what You want more than what I want.

21 What Judas might say today
Blessed is the one who chooses to do the will of God rather than attempting to impose his will on God.

22 Pray for: Your Spouse Your Family (immediate and extended)
Your Friends (believers and non- believers) The Church (global) Our Church Body (local) Our Nation Finally for yourself

23 Preparation for Session 6
Day 1. Read Mark 10: In the passage, James and John seem oblivious to everything Jesus has just told them. In what ways do we hear what we want to hear from Scripture and ignore what doesn’t align with our expectations. Day 2. Read Mark 10: IN what ways are you sometimes tempted to try to use God’s power and influence for your own gain? Day 3. Read Mark 10:42. What are some examples of times when you’ve experienced this kind of leadership in your own life? Day 4. Read Mark 10: Have you ever followed someone who leveraged his or her influence on your behalf? How effective was that person as a leader? Day 5. Read Mark 10: As a leader, what are some practical ways you can grow toward serving others rather than being served?
