4 Reading and Writing Exam structure
Core Extended Answer questions about a reading passage. Explain word choices and phrases from the passage. Use information from the reading passage to write in a set format words Make notes from passage B relevant to a set topic. Write a summary based on your notes. 5 Marks for reading R1 demonstrate understanding of explicit meanings
R2 demonstrate understanding of implicit meanings and attitudes R3 analyse, evaluate and develop facts, ideas and opinions. In the analysis: R4 demonstrate understanding of how writers achieve effects. In the summary: R1, R2 and R5 select for specific purposes

6 Marks for writing W1 articulate experience and express what is thought, felt and imagined W2 sequence facts, ideas and opinions W3 use a range of appropriate vocabulary.

7 Reading Exam Tips Annotate the passage. Underline or highlight key words and write one or two words to summarise the topic beside each paragraph. It will help you to find information faster. Read the question carefully. Underline or highlight key words. Pay close attention to marks given. Questions with two marks will require two key points. Use your own words. Manage your time! Don’t spend more time on any one section than you should. If you have time at the end, go back to it then.

8 Writing Exam Tips Read the question carefully. Use bullet points and key words from the question to plan what information from the passage is relevant. Plan to help you develop your ideas, paragraph clearly and meet the word count. Write in the requested format. Use your own words. Copied phrases will not be marked. In the summary, you may need to change the order of information Manage your time! Don’t spend more than you should on any one section at the expense of the others. Check and correct any errors.

9 Characterisation Good writers show a character through their words and how they speak (prosodics), their body language and how they move (kinesics). An extensive vocabulary will help you to do this effectively in the writing exam and to identify characterisation in the reading exam.

12 Adverbs Adverbs of manner usually end in “ly”. Brainstorm as many as you can with a partner. Vocabulary development and storytelling practice: Fortunately/Unfortunately story game Your teacher will give you a card with an adverb. You must use the adverb on your card to develop the story.

13 Literary Devices Revision Quiz
