16 We might ask ourselves why we believe the things we do about love
We might ask ourselves why we believe the things we do about love. Why do we think that love puts the other first, is given freely and completely, etc.? As believers, we find the answer in the nature of God. The Mystery of the Trinity—that God is three distinct Persons who give the gift of self to each other from all eternity— is the blueprint of all love. Love as the gift of self is represented in this book by arrows of reciprocal giving and receiving, which is always open to another. In this diagram, the Father and Son give the gift of self to each other, and the Holy Spirit, Who always existed, is the “fruit” or bond of their union. THIS IS THE BLUEPRINT, THE BRANDING, THE STAMP OF EVERYTHING THAT EXISTS! The Gift of Self for Fruitful Communion

87 Another area that people don’t think through is sterilization
Another area that people don’t think through is sterilization. We would think it is absurd to deliberately cut off a perfectly functioning hand or gouge out an eye. Yet, when it comes to doing damage to our sexual organs, we forget. Our bodies are not shells—they are integral to us. One of my friends told me with great sadness in his voice, “I knew getting a vasectomy was wrong, but I was worried about my wife’s health. I did it for a good reason, but I know the end does not justify the means...and our marriage suffered.” Another friend, a surgical nurse, tells the story of holding a uterus in her hand while the doctor “tied the patient’s tubes” when my friend realized, “I am assisting in a procedure that does damage to a woman. What am I doing!?” She never helped with such a procedure again, the hospital respecting her views. Another woman told me with tears how she felt after her sterilization, sitting in the hospital bed, feeling empty, regretting her decision, wanting to be a mom again. There’s a sure way of not getting pregnant. Abstinence. It may seem old-fashioned, but we can also call it “green”: respecting, not damaging, creation.

88 Throughout this book, we have tried to convey the significance of the body as a sacrament of the whole person, and that the body has deep meaning, which guides us in our search for identity and purpose. Proponents of gender theory tell us that our bodies do not guide us regarding the truth...we can simply decide what gender we are. Yet, our sex—as male or female—is based on the body and its meaning. As future parents, you are the most formative influences on your children. Although it will difficult to challenge prevalent ideologies (seen in Facebook's 50 gender options), help them to see the greater truth that the body matters, and to accept the body for what it is, a revelatory gift from God. Meanwhile, teach them that every single person we encounter deserves a response of love. This is equally true for people who consider themselves to be the opposite gender from the sex of their bodies, or persons who says they are homosexual, transsexual, etc. Love is the only fitting response

89 InCORPorating the BODY
WHERE DID CHRISTIANITY BEGIN? HOW DID CHRISTIANITY BEGIN? WHAT’S THE CLOSEST WE CAN BE TO GOD ON EARTH? WHAT IS THE CENTER OF OUR FAITH?
