Commas – Meant to indicate a pause in a sentence When to use commas: Between two independent clauses with a coordinating conjunction Ex: I hate bananas, but I love chocolate After introductory phrases, clauses, or words Ex: Even though I hate bananas, I will eat them with chocolate To separate items in a series or coordinate adjectives Ex: I like bananas, chocolate, and sprinkles on my sundae. To set of nonrestrictive phrases and clauses or appositives Ex: Bananas, which taste better in chocolate, are a source of potassium. To set off quotations Ex: The three-year-old child whined, “I hate bananas!”

Commas – Meant to indicate a pause in a sentence When NOT to use commas Separating subject from verb Incorrect: She, is very nice. To divide a compound subject or predicate Incorrect: Gabby, and Steve saw me walk by Incorrect: The ballerinas leapt, and twirled with pointed feet.

Commas – Meant to indicate a pause in a sentence Other commas Addresses – She lives in Sacramento, California. Dates – Her birthday is January 21, Interjections – Hey, happy birthday! In numbers – The fossil is over 1,000 years old.

Activity Write the sentences in your journal. Insert commas in the following sentences. Next to each, write what kind of comma you used. Except for English class I enjoy school. I wanted to go to the game but I had too much homework. Walt Disney an innovator and dreamer created Mickey Mouse. Walt Disney who created Mickey Mouse was an innovator and dreamer. An innovator and dreamer Walt Disney created Mickey Mouse. “Hey go away” he said. I just want to eat sleep and relax.

Putting it all together… Write a reflective, narrative paragraph about your day today. In it, include each kind of comma at least once. Include at least 5 words that incorporate different roots from any of the lessons we have had. Types of commas: Introductory Between adjectives Nonrestrictive Date Appositive Address Series Number Between two independent clauses - Quote
