5 Objective 2 minutes TURN AND TALK
OBJECTIVE: SWBAT understand growth mindset by completing a tic-tac-toe menu. TURN AND TALK What is today’s objective in your own words? How does it relate to what we have been doing? Is there any new vocabulary? Have students Turn and Talk to discuss the objective.

6 Turn and Talk 4 minutes With your shoulder partner discuss the following: How do we learn new things? How can we exercise the brain? How does the brain think thoughts? Have students turn to their partners at their table and discuss each questions. Using a cold calling strategy have students share out their responses. Yesterday, someone said, “ ________ is just a very smart person?”  How is this growth or fixed mindset?

7 How would you label them?
The man who failed 1,000 times when trying to invent the light bulb. The man who actually invented the light bulb. The man who missed over 9,000 shots and lost over 300 games in his basketball career The man who won six NBA Championships and was voted MVP six times. In their teams, have them discuss how they would label each one of these peoples. Have the students share out their responses. It turns out that in each example, these are the same people. Who can guess who each of two people are? (ANSWER: Thomas Edison, Michael Jordan) “In fixed mindset, we use labels to explain everything. All we tend to look at is the outcome. But, we really need to look at the process. Only with a growth mindset do we stick with a goal and understand that failure is a pathway to success. Let’s watch this short video about Michael Jordan.

8 Michael Jordan Link:

9 What kind of mindset does Michael Jordan have?
Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team They used to say that his brother was the one that was going to be a basketball star. After missing a crucial free throw at the buzzer, he stayed after the game and shot free throws for six hours. Jordan would wake up early in the morning to practice before school, and would always stay late after practice. What kind of mindset does Michael Jordan have? Using a cold calling strategy have students read the bullets on the slide. Animation: Have students discuss the question in their teams. Then have them share out their responses. Chart responses on chart paper labeled Michael Jordan.

10 Growth Mindset Jigsaw 20 minutes
In your teams: Pair - read your section of the article. On computer paper, summarize your section by : Writing a Tweet up to 140 characters. Must include at least 3 hashtags Be prepared to share out Break the students into 3 teams. Each team is giving a section of the article to read: What does your brain need? What makes you smart? The Growth Mindset Explain they will have to read the article using pair readings. Ask them to then write a tweet on their chart paper and include 3 hashtags. Then have the students share out their tweets.

Take one post it from your bin and write A positive shout out to another student OR A way you used growth mindset (GM) today Example 1: “Shout out to Brandon for helping me understand how to graph.” Example 2: “I used GM today by trying to solve without a calculator even though I always use a calculator.”

16 Exit Ticket 3 minutes Take 3 minutes to silently and independently complete the exit ticket.

17 Quote of the Day Reflection
Giving ELL students an article in Spanish was engaging and a good idea. Kahoot was engaging. Good idea to include Spanish translation in middle. Continue making brain breaks something that ELL students can participate in. Slide 6 could have been more tangible, and more directly related to something they learned yesterday. The tweets were solid, larger classes were engaged, but the gallery walk was ineffective. Should give them post-its to take leave notes on. Good idea posting the tweet stuff outside. Good idea cutting up the poster paper into thirds for each class (per article) Once the video plays once on youtube, I don’t need to keep my internet connected. Can play without internet! YES! Only time to do Tic Tac Toe menu in one class. Relatively engaging. Students did not need that much time. Would have been better if I could provide markers. I had them do it on computer paper.
