Update me on how that is going. Are you approved? Have you started? How was your panel meeting or your help-get-you-approved meeting? What are your next steps. Have you started logging hours?

To demonstrate an understanding of Hemingway’s iceberg principle To demonstrate how Hemingway’s iceberg principle applies to what you read To connect what you read to Hemingway’s life Due today: Have read story/part 1, completed your journal entry 1, and facilitator - questions (submitted before class began) Homework: Due Fri: Story/part 2 and journal 2 and facilitator questions (submitted before class) Due Tues: Story/part 3 and journal 3 and facilitator questions (submitted before class)

4 Group Evaluation Give me a grade for each member of your group. Consider that; 9-10 = A 8-9 = B 7-8 = C 6 = D

5 Lit Group Expectations
Everyone participates during the lit group meeting (at all times) Playing games, off topic discussions, moving too quickly through the procedure, etc will result in a loss of points for the meeting While there is an assigned facilitator, everyone asks/answers questions to further the group’s understanding of the story. The goal of lit groups is to gain a deeper understanding of the literature. Don’t be afraid to actually analyze the story – go out on a limb.

6 Discussion Protocol Class recall activity (10 minutes)
The note taker should start taking notes at this point Share out with your groups (5 minutes) Facilitator asks the group members if they had any questions from the reading (basic clarifications) This should not take more than 5 minutes Facilitator asks their 6 discussion questions Aim for three minutes per question (18 minutes) This means you will have to discuss each question in depth Also, work on building off questions Facilitator then runs a discussion based on the journal entrie. Each person should spend roughly 5 minutes reading/talking about their journal entry The should discuss the topics that the covered, connections to Hemingway’s life, etc

7 Discussion Protocol – Con’t
Each person should write down one of the following (3 minutes): The most interesting point brought up in discussion. Something you learned from the literature circle that you hadn’t considered before. Your best comment/contribution to the group Facilitator runs the “final word” discussion (5 minutes) Each group member shares out their final words Each group member has a chance to ask any final clarifying questions Share out (5 minutes per group) Choose one person in the group to take on the role of “reporter” That person will share a brief summary of the story your group read Any meaningful connections to Hemingway’s life What your group thought was below the surface of the story (ice berg theory) And the most interesting point brought up in discussion

8 Reflection activity On a piece of paper that you can turn in, complete the following: Reflect back on your meeting today: What went well overall? What did you like? What didn’t go well overall? What didn’t you like? What did you personally do well today? What can you do better in the future to make your next meeting better/more meaningful?
