Four new initiatives to support reading and literacy:

Developing Literacy, Reading and Numeracy at Barnwell
Students will read for 20 minutes every day as part of their curriculum. Accelerated Reader will be used to measure progress over time, as well as the Star Reading test. Teachers will be emphasising the role of numeracy and mathematical thinking within their subject areas.

Literacy riddles Every week a literacy riddle will be on the plasma screens for students to try and solve. It’s designed to promote divergent thinking and develop students’ understanding of the English language. Numeracy puzzles Every week a numeracy riddle will be on the plasma screens for students to try and solve. It’s designed to promote critical thinking and develop students’ problem solving skills.

Rewards: certificates, raffle tickets, phone calls home.
Developing Literacy, Reading and Numeracy at Barnwell Literacy Legends Weekly literacy tasks to complete in tutor time to improve students’ reading comprehension and analysis. Students can become: Book Busters, Word Wizards, Confident Crafters and, finally, Literacy Legends if they complete all the tasks. Maths Masters Weekly maths tasks to complete in tutor time to improve students’ mathematical thinking. Students can become: Number Crunchers, Proficient Puzzlers, Skilful Solver and, finally, Maths Master if they complete all the tasks. Rewards: certificates, raffle tickets, phone calls home.

Be positive. How can you help your child with numeracy?
Developing Literacy, Reading and Numeracy at Barnwell How can you help your child with numeracy? Be positive. Ban the phrases “I can’t do maths” or “I don’t like maths” in your home. Share your experiences. Involve your child in maths activities including cooking, finance and travel. Emphasise effort not ability. Hard work will always result in improvement.
